HP PCs - Configuring the boot order in the system BIOS

Z7_3054ICK0KGTE30AQO5O3KA30N0

hp-concentra-wrapper-portlet

Actions

When the computer starts, the system BIOS begins to check a predetermined list of drives and devices that might contain an operating system such as Windows.

The computer can boot an operating system from a hard drive, optical drive, USB storage device, or a network. The order in which the devices are checked is configurable through the BIOS setup menu.

What is the default boot order?

The default boot order settings for the computer are configured in the factory. The default boot order determines what the computer boots to first.

UEFI boot order

  1. OS Boot Manager

  2. USB drive

  3. USB CD or DVD drive

  4. Network adapter

Legacy boot order:

  1. OS Boot Manager

  2. Hard drive

  3. USB drive

  4. USB CD or DVD drive

  5. USB network adapter

  6. Network adapter

To boot to a DVD, CD, or USB device, bootable files must be installed or the computer might bypass the device and load what is installed on the local computer.

An error message might appear if a disc is inserted into a computer that does not contain an operating system. If this error occurs, remove the disc and restart the computer.

If you have installed a second hard drive and the computer does not boot, select the hard drive that contains the operating system as first boot device in the hard drive group.

Configuring the boot order

The steps for modifying the boot order can vary depending on the model of the computer.

You can configure the boot order from the Advanced tab in the BIOS settings menu.

Use the following the steps to configure the boot order on most computers:

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.

  2. While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu.

The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the f2 or f6 key on some computers.

  3. After opening the BIOS, go to the boot settings.

    • Notebook computers: Select .

    • Desktop computers: Select .

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to change the boot order.

Resetting the boot order to the default settings

Use these steps to reset the boot order.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.

  2. While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu.

The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the f2 or f6 key on some computers.

  3. In the BIOS Setup utility, select the File tab.

  4. Select Apply Defaults and Exit. The BIOS setup utility closes and the computer boots into Windows.

Note:

BIOS configurations vary depending on the computer. For further information about a specific computer, see the documentation provided with the computer. You can find the BIOS settings in the Maintenance and Service Guide.

What Is HP Boot Menu? How To Access Boot Menu Or BIOS [MiniTool Tips]

Languages: EnglishFrançaisEspañolDeutsch

Summary :

HP boot menu

What are the keys to press in order to get to HP boot menu? What is the HP BIOS key? How to change boot order? Can you boot from USB on HP? How to boot HP from other devices? All these questions will be answered one by one in the following content. MiniTool Solution is working on providing users with more solutions to computer or data related problems.

Booting refers to the action of starting a computer: desktop, laptop, and tablet. Two common ways to boot a device are pressing a button (button combinations) and executing commands through certain tools. In short, booting is the process to prepare your device ready for use.

What Is Boot Menu

Boot menu is a menu you could access before entering an operating system. Each time when you start your computer, you can choose to access boot menu or not. You can load up other operating systems (or applications) manually by accessing boot menu and making changes.

HP Boot Menu Key

It’s necessary to access HP boot menu when users need to install a new operating system or recover data from a corrupted internal hard disk. It allows users to choose what device to use/boot from: CD, DVD, USB flash drive, hard drive, or Network.

Tip:BIOS and UEFI are two mainstream firmware types used to perform hardware initialization during computer booting process.

HP boot menu

Many users are asking the same question - what is the HP BIOS key. They want to access HP laptop/desktop boot menu but don’t know how. For instance,

What key to press to get boot options?

I have a new Pavilion 15-N297SA coming this week and what I like to do before I boot the machine into Windows for the first time is put my cloning software into the DVD drive and turn the laptop on and press a certain key to bring up boot option, you boot from hard drive/dvd drive/usb/external hdd etc, then take an image of ALL partitions including hidden and recovery options so just in case something goes wrong I have that to fall back on. Now does anyone know what key I need to press to get the boot option up before it boots into the OS?- asked Alloneword in the HP Community

There is no definite answer to this question, it differs based on models. Please search for the exact HP desktop BIOS key and HP notebook BIOS key (also called HP laptop BIOS key) online from your manufacturer's official website.

In short:

  • The generic HP boot menu keys are Esc and F9. The key to access HP laptop boot menu on most models is Esc (HP Pavilion boot menu is no exception).
  • The universal HP BIOS keys are Esc, F10, and F1. The most used HP laptop BIOS key is Esc or F10.

What Are the HP Boot Options

The boot menu of HP desktop and HP laptop is a little bit different; I’ll show them to you respectively.

HP Desktop Startup Menu

What are the Start Menu options & corresponding keys on HP desktop?

  • System Information (F1): it shows you the basic information of your computer, including Manufacturer, Product Name, SKU Number, Serial Number, BIOS Revision, BIOS Date, Processor Type, Processor Speed, Memory Size, etc. (How to fix PC not booting after BIOS update?)

Secure Boot is a feature embedded in HP PCs and laptops; the HP manufacturers make it enabled by default in Windows 10. It’s useful for enhancing HP security:

  • Avoid virus infections.
  • Prevent malware attacks.
  • Block the use of non-trusted hardware or bootable discs (CDs/DVDs).

Of course, you can disable Secure Boot manually when you need to use trusted but unrecognized hardware or boot from unrecognized recovery discs.

HP laptop Boot Menu Complete Guide

You have an HP laptop and wanna know everything about HP Boot Menu like what is Booting?, what is boot menu?, what is boot order?, HP boot menu key, How to Access HP Laptop Boot Menu?, How to change Boot Order in an HP Laptop? all these queries are answered in this HP laptop Boot Menu Complete Guide.

HP laptop Boot Menu Complete Guide

What is Booting

Booting is a procedure for establishing the computer. It can be started by hardware such as a button press or by software command. After a computer is turned on, the device’s Central Processing Unit has no software in its main memory, so some process must be installed so that it can be loaded. This is done by hardware in the CPU or by a separate processor in the system.

What is Boot Menu?

The boot menu is a menu in which you have an approach before entering the operating system. Every single time you turn on your computer, you can choose to have an access boot menu or not. You can load up another operating system like Windows 10 physically by having access to the boot menu and making changes.

What is Boot Order?

In the very beginning, when the computer is turned on, the Basic Input and Output System starts to scan a pre-determined list of drives and devices that may contain an operating system such as Windows. The computer can boot an operating system with the help of a floppy drive, hard drive, CD or DVD, USB storage, or a network. The procedure in which the devices are checked is arranged by the Basic Input and Output System (BIOS).

Types of Boot Order

Types of Boot Order in HP Laptop

There are two types of boot order and they are as follows:

Legacy Boot Order: Legacy Boot is the BIOS firmware’s boot process, and it contains a list of bootable storage devices such as SSD, Hard Disk Drives, and Floppy Disk Drives. You can set the priority order. The BIOS performs Power On Self-Test when the computer is turned on. To indicate normal booting, the internal speaker emits a single beep. The code is used to identify the problem and provide further assistance.

The firmware loads the first section of each storage target into memory after it has completed the POST procedure. It then scans the file for a valid MBR (Master Boot Record). The firmware executes the bootloader to choose a partition to boot from if it finds a valid MBR. If it doesn’t find one, the firmware proceeds to the next device.

UEFI Boot Order: Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is used in most new motherboards. UEFI has many advantages over BIOS. It is user-friendly and has the most crucial benefit of all. Graphical User Interface (GUI) BIOS offers a blue screen with many options. The standard BIOS cannot recognize large storage drives. UEFI is an excellent alternative and can recognize large storage drives.

Regular BIOS uses the keyboard to select options. UEFI allows you to control the interface with the mouse. Secure boot is also available in UEFI. It prevents unsigned drivers from being loaded and protects against malicious software. Some computers equipped with UEFI allow the user to activate legacy BIOS compatibility mode also.

UEFI boot uses UEFI firmware. It keeps a list of boot volumes, called EFI service partitions. The UEFI firmware scans every bootable storage device connected to the system during Power-On Self-Test, verifying that all hardware functions correctly. To find a EFI partition to start after the firmware checks the GPT.

Legacy vs UEFI Boot Order – Which is Best for HP Laptops

UEFI uses URFI firmware, which maintains a list of valid boot volumes called EFI Service Partitions. This is used for the boot process.

The legacy boot uses BIOS firmware to initiate the boot process. Another difference between UEFI & legacy boot is that UEFI is more secure and efficient than legacy boot.

The main difference between UEFI (or legacy boot) is that UEFI, the most recent method of booting a computer, is intended to replace BIOS. The legacy boot is the process used to boot the laptop with BIOS firmware. UEFI, in short, is the successor of BIOS.

What is the default boot order?

The default boot order settings for the computer are decided in the factory. The default boot order determines what the system will be booting first.
1. UEFI boot order
2. OS Boot Manager
3. USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk
4. USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
5. Network Adapter
6. Legacy boot order
7. OS Boot Manager
8. Notebook Hard Drive
9. USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk
10. USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
11.USB Network Adapter
12. Network adapter

To boot to a USB Device, DVD, CD-ROM, there must be bootable files installed on the PC, or the system might be detoured and will load on what is already on the PC.
An operating system not found error message may appear if a USB Flash Drive, floppy disk, or an optical disk is Plugged into a laptop or computer that does not carry an operating system. If this error occurs, remove the disk and restart the computer.

HP Boot Menu Key
