    The packet loss is your router not allowing the Xbox to connect on to the internet and on rare occasions it can be the ISP

    Try this first

    Hard reset the Xbox by holding down the power button on the front of the Xbox for 15 seconds. After the 15 seconds let go of the power button then restart the Xbox

    Power cycle your network by unplugging the power to the modem & router for about 60 seconds.

    If that fails then, go to Settings > Network > Network Settings > Forget Wireless Network

     - Go to Settings > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > Alternate MAC Address > Clear > let the Xbox Restart

     - Try and reconnect to your wireless network again

    Try your network test again. If that fails then try the next steps.

    Go to Advanced settings > DNS Settings > Manual - Set the Primary DNS as 8.8.8.8 and the Secondary as 8.8.4.4

    Go to Settings > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > Alternate MAC Address > Clear > let the Xbox Restart

    See what you're connection info is on the Xbox One  

    Go to Settings > Network > Network Settings > Detailed Network Statistics

    Thanks for that additional info and for trying those steps. To check, are you able to test out a wired connection with an Ethernet cable running from your router to the back of your Xbox One console?

    I am currently unable as I'm using a shared internet connection. However I do know that it's a fibre optic network and the main modem is in my living space however I do not have access to the router to try a direct connection. Is there any other advice as like I said I am sharing with people who live in same building as me however I would be able to contact my ISP because I'm not on the account. I do however have access to the router settings however I know they have an Xbox of their own and I don't want to compromize their connection. I've tried pretty much every option you have given plus any I've found on YouTube and other sites to no avail. If I plugged an Ethernet cable into the modem i doubt it would send a signal to my Xbox I know there's a fiber optic box which is in the basement where my apartment is located but as I mentioned the router itself is in their suite. I do appreciate any help or pointers...

    Gotcha. By any chance are you able to test out a mobile hotspot with your phone? While that's not a permanent solution or a recommended way to use Xbox Live for online multiplayer, it could indicate a different issue if you're still experiencing 100% packet loss with that hotspot.

    Since you don't have access or control of the network it's going to be an issue somewhere on your network setup.

    The network itself will have a main router, which you state you don't have access too.

    You stated that you did power cycle a modem/router, so if there is a dual router setup then that's most likely where the problem is at.


    The 100% packet loss occurs when the Xbox is unable to communicate out on the ports that it needs.

    Since you don't have access or control of the network it's going to be an issue somewhere on your network setup.

    The network itself will have a main router, which you state you don't have access too.

    Okay I'll clarify. The Router is Upstairs the modem is not. I dont have access to it meaning I can't go up and reset ect. I can access the internal settings and reboot the router that way which is what I did. The Fibre optic modem/box is in my suite. Do you think if I opened the required ports that that may make a difference? Thanks for all your help. Been trying to figure it out for days. If worst comes to worst I'll just get my own net hooked up.

Do you think if I opened the required ports that that may make a difference? Thanks for all your help. Been trying to figure it out for days. If worst comes to worst I'll just get my own net hooked up.

    Troubleshoot multiplayer connection errors

    If you’re getting an error message when you run the multiplayer connection test, select the specific error message below to troubleshoot this issue:

    Step 1: Troubleshoot your wireless or wired connection

    Step 2: Change your firewall settings

    Firewalls within your network hardware are intended to help secure your network by restricting the information that travels between your devices and the Internet. However, you may experience connection issues if your firewall restricts necessary traffic (a setting which may be blocking your console from connecting to the Xbox network). Additionally, some firewall settings, such as IP flood detection, can cause connection issues.

    Please consult your router documentation or the router manufacturer’s website to learn how to disable the firewall in order to test your connection. If the test is successful, you can then adjust your settings up incrementally until you find a level that will allow you to connect and still secure your network.

    Run the connection test again (Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test multiplayer connection). If this does not resolve the MTU error, continue to the next step.

    Step 3: Enable perimeter network (also known as DMZ) functionality on your router

    Perimeter network (also known as DMZ) functionality on a router essentially moves your device to an area outside your network firewall. If you enable perimeter network functionality on your router, you should be able to connect, join games, and host games or parties.

    Note It is critical that you use a static IP address on the console when you set up a perimeter network. To set a static IP address, use your router’s DHCP reservation function, when available. If this is not available, you will have to set up manual IP settings on your Xbox console. You will only be able to place one console into the perimeter network. Therefore, if you have multiple consoles, this solution will only resolve the issue for one of them.

    For information about how to enable and disable the perimeter network setting on your router, please consult your router documentation.

    Run the connection test again (Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test multiplayer connection). If this does not resolve the MTU error, continue to the next step.

    Important Do not use a combination of port forwarding, UPnP, and perimeter networksettings. If this solution does not resolve your issue, you must disable the perimeter network (DMZ) before you go to the next step.

    Step 4: Check for packet loss

    Packet loss can cause connection issues, such as in-game lag. You can check for packet loss on your console by looking at your detailed network statistics:

    1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.
    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
    3. Select Test network speed & statistics.

    If the test results indicate any packet loss (upstream or downstream), you may need to contact technical support at your Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance. When you contact technical support, have the following information available:

    • Document as much information as possible about your computer and network. This includes the make, model, and firmware version of your router or other network hardware.
    • Write down the exact error message that you receive.
    • Note the steps that you have already taken and the results and details you’ve collected during each of those steps.

    Step 5: Try a direct-to-modem connection

    Connect your console directly to your modem instead of connecting it to your router. This is a temporary solution meant to help determine the cause of the problem.

    If you can connect with a direct-to-modem connection, your console and modem are working as expected. To connect using your router, you might need to change a setting on your router.

    1. On your router, unplug the network cable connecting the router to your console (leave the other end of this cable plugged into your console).
    2. On your modem, unplug the network cable that connects the modem to your router. At this point, neither the console nor the modem should be connected to the router.
    3. Now connect your console directly to your modem (use the same cable that was connecting your console to your router).
    4. Press and hold the Xbox button  on the console for a minimum of 5 seconds to turn off the console.
    5. Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem.
    6. After one minute, plug the modem back in and wait for all the lights to return to their normal state.
    7. Turn on the console.
    8. Test your connection again (Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test multiplayer connection).

    If this corrects the MTU error, it means your router is incompatible with the console because of its firmware, or the router has had a hardware failure. Your options are to:

    • Check with your router manufacturer to see if there is a firmware update that you can try to install on your router. After you install the firmware update, try to connect directly to the router again.
    • Try restoring your router to factory defaults. You may need to consult your device documentation or contact your router manufacturer for help with this.
    • Buy a new router.

    If this does NOT correct the MTU error, you may need to contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to resolve this issue. For example, you may need to ask your ISP to replace a defective modem, verify the settings on your modem, or check your connection speed.

    In addition, not all ISPs use the same network layout, protocols, and processes. It’s also possible that your ISP may be experiencing known issues that could be blocking your console from connecting.

    Before you contact your ISP, be sure to document as much of the problem as you can. For example, document any error messages that you receive and any changes that you have made while troubleshooting the issue.

    Even if your internet connection is fine and you haven’t had issues connecting to a game’s servers before, there are still several obstacles that can prevent you from having a smooth gaming experience. 

    One of these issues that tends to irk Xbox One players from time to time is something called packet loss, which is essentially just the console telling you that not all of your data is getting to the right destination. 

    This problem happens frequently, although it won’t usually cause more than a brief hiccup in online performance. But when it happens in larger percentages and your internet connection starts rapidly failing to deliver your data, then it can cause serious issues, even stopping your game from working properly in some cases. 

    There are few solutions you can try to use to eliminate high packet loss if your connection is prompting an error message on your Xbox. So if you are having problems connecting to Xbox Live or with your game’s online performance, try using these methods. 

    Restart your console and router

    You should first try completely rebooting your console to make sure it is running at peak efficiency. Sometimes all it takes is a reboot to make sure your connection improves because it can solve little bugs and network errors upon startup. 

    Likewise, you can also restart your internet router to see if that helps too. Even if you use an Ethernet cord to access the internet on your console, this could still potentially fix your issues. 

    Disconnecting from the internet

    If resetting your system and router doesn’t work, try manually disconnecting your console from the internet. This will require you to access your Xbox One’s settings menu and navigate to the Network settings. 

    Once there, simply select the Go Offline option and you should disconnect from all servers. Once this is done, turn it back on and test your connection again to make sure that everything works. 

    This is a method of resetting your console’s connection to your internet that will hopefully reboot it without any of the pre-existing errors. 

    Try switching connection methods

    If you are using an Ethernet cord, try to use Wi-Fi to connect to Xbox Live. The problem could be something caused by the hardware, such as a loose pin in the Ethernet port causing a delay in your connection.

    If none of these help, you can always check if Xbox Live is down, because that will prevent you from using multiple online features. You can do so by the Xbox Live Status website for more information.

    Packet loss is when data traveling across a computer network, and/or the internet, fails to reach its destination.

    In small amounts, this isn’t necessarily a problem, however, when the packet loss percentage starts to increase it can cause problems in the reliability of your network.

    This can eventually stop your games from working properly and cause the ‘You have high packet loss’ error message.

    How to Reduce Xbox Live Packet Loss

    There are many solutions you can use to try to fix packet loss. Each solution will depend on what is causing your packet loss in the first place.

    Packet loss problems usually come down to the reliability of your internet connection, especially as these days many of us have connections more than fast enough for internet gaming.

    If you want to check the speed of your connection however, the following link explains the internet speeds recommended by Microsoft.

    Luckily, unless your wireless router is faulty, the only extra equipment you will need to test out these solutions is an Ethernet cable.

    Power cycle (reboot) the console and/or wireless router

    The first and easiest thing to do is to quite simply power cycle (turn off and turn on again) where your console and wireless router.

    This is because sometimes there is just a problem, or bug, with the network that can be solved by resetting your network connection.

    It is probably easiest if you disconnect then reconnect the Xbox connection first. To do this you simply need to open your network settings and choose ”Go offline”.

    If this doesn’t work, you can try resetting your modem and/or router by unplugging it and leaving it off for a few minutes (do the same with your Xbox). Once you have done this, turn on your Xbox and test out the connection. 

    Disconnect third-party headsets (if you use Wi-Fi)

    If resetting your connection doesn’t work, the problem could be to do with interference from another device. One of the main culprits for this is third party headsets that broadcast on the same frequency as your wireless router.

    To test if this is the problem turn off your third party headset and check your network to see if the problem has stopped.

    Check for other interference (if you use Wi-Fi)

    If third-party headsets aren’t the problem, you could still be getting interference from some other type of electronic device or even a static object.

    Interference can be broken down into active and passive interference.

    Active interference is from electronic devices such as microwaves, baby monitors, and other wireless networks while passive interference comes from objects that may disrupt the wireless signal. This can include walls, filing cabinets, and mirrors etc.

    To check if this is the problem try to turn off/remove any objects that could be interfering with your wireless signal and move any objects out of the direct line between your Xbox and your router.

    Another option for eliminating interference as the problem is to try using an Ethernet cable instead of wifi if at all possible. This will take any likelihood of wireless interference out of the equation.

    We actually recommend using Ethernet cabling when at all possible. Wifi, aside from being half-duplex (which isn’t ideal for online gaming), as opposed to Ethernet’s preferred full-duplex option, most often ends up the second best media for data sensitive traffic.

    Check the distance (if you use Wi-Fi)

    Distance can be a problem as even if you are able to connect to your wireless network, the signal will degrade and become weaker as the distance increases.

    As well as this, even being too close to the router can be a problem due to interference.

    According to Microsoft, the perfect distance between your Xbox console and your router is between 1.5 and 15 meters, so try to set your Xbox up at around this distance if possible.

    Check For Xbox Live Problems

    If none of these solutions work for you, it is also possible that your packet loss could be caused by a problem with Xbox live itself.

    If this is case there unfortunately isn’t much you can do except wait for Xbox to fix the problem.

    The reason for your packet loss problem could be to do with your router. To check if this is the case, you should:

    • First plug your Xbox straight into your router with an Ethernet cable, and do a speed test.
    • Then plug your Xbox into your modem and test the speed.

    Use Speedtest.net to run the speed test...

    When you are connected directly to your modem, a slight speed increase is expected compared to when you are connected to your router.

    However, if there is a large increase in speed between your connection to the modem and your connection to the router, you may have a problem with your router.

    If you know the problem is with the router and your ISP can't or won't help you out, then you can reset your router to the factory default. 

    Be warned that you will lose all your configuration settings! Always contact your ISP/Service provider first!
