Attack On Titan: 10 Interesting Facts About Ymir Fritz You Need To Know

The origins of the Titans was a huge mystery in Attack on Titanas the series delved into where they came from. When discussing the origins of the Titans, the name Ymir Fritz name seems to pop up in its history.

As audiences learned more about the history of these beings, they found out that Ymir was actually the centerpiece of this mystery. As the series dug deeper into Ymir, fans were provided a look at where she came from and what links her to the world of Attack on Titan.

10 She Grew Up As A Slave

Ymir had a tough life during her existence in Eldia. She was a captive of the Eldian empire when her village was attacked and enslaved by them. Throughout her entire life, she obeyed the Eldian King Fritz by helping him build an empire, kill his enemies, and give him children.

Despite this life, she still worshiped Fritz, even going as far as to sacrifice herself in order to save him. Even after her passing, Ymir would remain loyal to the royal family creating Titans in a faraway land.

9 Ymir Was The First To Get Titan Powers

In the beginning, Ymir was the first person to obtain the power of the Titans. It was about 2,000 years ago when her village was attacked and captured by the Eldians. As a slave, Ymir was forced to be hunted by the Eldians.

As she grew desperate, a wounded Ymir ended up seeking shelter at a big tree where she fell into a sinkhole. Once she landed in a pool of water, a spine-like creature ends up fusing with her body to turn Ymir into the very first Titan. With this powerful form, she was able to serve the Eldians by helping them with the land until her death.

8 She Was The Only One To Fully Possess Powers of a Titan

Being the Founding Titan, Ymir came out as the only one among the Titans to fully possess the power of all of them. Others who came after her only hold a fraction of her power. With just her strength, she would wipe out Marley’s forces completely with her abilities.

RELATED: Attack On Titan: The 10 Most Shocking Deaths In The Series, Ranked

Being the first of her kind, Ymir was in complete control of her Titan form whenever she changed into it. With this amazing power, it’s no wonder not everyone who had Titan powers could surpass her.

7 Her Power Was Divided Into What Was Known As The Nine Titans

As a reward for her services, King Fritz took Ymir in as his concubine and produced three children. After Ymir’s passing, her body was consumed by her daughters in order to preserve her powers and pass it down from generation to generation.

The tradition would continue to be done with every child in the royal line eating their mother’s blood so that the power of the Titans would not die out. Ymir’s power would be divided into what is known as the Nine Titans, with Ymir being the Founding Titan. This would create the Titans that the manga/anime's main characters would encounter throughout the series.

6 She Was Worshiped As a Deity

Ymir’s power was unlike anything that humankind has seen. The story of how Ymir got her powers varies among different regions. Among Eldian cults, Ymir was viewed as a goddess.

However, the Marleyans saw Ymir as evil and were under the assumption that her powers came directly from Devil since she wiped out all of their forces during their war against the Eldians. There are also those who think that Ymir got her powers from Mother Nature. Despite all these tales, Ymir was no more than an ordinary girl who was given a powerful yet accursed gift.

5 Ymir Created The Curse That Lessens A Titan’s Lifespan

After 13 years since she awakened her powers, Ymir died protecting the king’s life. Her death resulted in what would be known as the Curse of Ymir. With every Titan born, they would live up to 13 years before their bodies weaken and ultimately wither.

RELATED: Attack on Titan: 10 Pieces of Mikasa Fan Art Every Fan Has To See

A Titan’s lifespan would never go beyond Ymir’s own existence, giving Titans this curse as they roam the land. This would explain how characters like Eren, Uri Reiss, and Tom Ksaver would end up getting sick and age at an accelerated speed during their final years.

4 Her Name Has A Connection To Norse Mythology

Believe it or not, Ymir’s name and power have some link to Norse mythology. According to these tales, Ymir has been characterized as an ascendant of all giants. Her name actually translates to “the scream.”

If one looks back at the origins of her powers, Ymir received her abilities after she was touched by the source of all living matter. Similarly in Norse mythology, the same holds true as Ymir was born from Eitr, a liquid substance that is the origin of all living things.

3 Ymir Was Known By A Different Name

The stories of Ymir varied among different regions, however, the most interesting comes from within the royal family. Frieda Reiss shared the story of Ymir with her younger half-sister Historia, where her name was changed to Krista. Frieda described Ymir as a kind girl who was always thinking of others. She spoke with Historia about Ymir in her storybook, which illustrated her deal with the Devil to obtain the Founding Titan’s powers.

Frieda would tell Historia to act more like Ymir, suggesting that she looked up to her for guidance. Historia would forget these chats due to Frieda using her powers to erase some of her memories, but she would often get vague images of Krista as times passes.

2 After Her Death, Ymir’s Soul Went Into Another Plane of Existence

After she passed away, Ymir’s soul ends up in a place called the “Coordinate.” This desert is huge and the only thing that holds it is a big pillar that acts as a link between her and the Titans she created. Her soul is in the form of a young girl when audiences meet her.

RELATED: Attack On Titan: 10 Major Things That Completely Changed The Show

This place is also where all Titans go when they die. What is interesting is that she is stuck in chains just as she was a slave before and continues to serve the Fritz family.

1 Ymir Has The Ability to Create Titans

As she lived in solitary in this mysterious desert, Ymir was stuck with only her devotion to the royal family by creating Titans. As she can make Titans with her bare hands, Ymir was able to send more of her kind into the world.

Those with the genetics of her powers were known as the Subjects of Ymir. With each Titan, they would possess a different power from Ymir, sharing the same thread as her with every creation.

Attack On Titan: Every Ymir Titan And Where They Are Right Now

Created by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan has been called one of the best animes ever created. Known for its action-packed and mystery filled episode, the upcoming season 4 has fans theorizing about the end of the beloved series. The 4th season will be the last and will possibly depict the end of the war between Marley and Eldia.

RELATED: Attack On Titan Season 1: 5 Best & 5 Worst Episodes

Season 4 will probably explore more of the Nine Titan Powers that have been passed down through the Eldian people. After Ymir Fritz gained the Titan powers, she died and the power split into nine titans, which could be transferred. So, here are the Nine Titan powers in the anime and where they are.

9 Armored Titan

The Armored Titan has hardened plates all over his body, which is very difficult to break. The Titan is intelligent like all the other Nine Titans, and can move swiftly and has a high level of endurance.

The Armored Titan is currently owned by Reiner Braun, a fellow member of Levi Squad, who works for Marley, and whose goal is to capture Eren and gain the Titan powers he possesses. He was last seen escaping the Scout regiment after they retook Wall Maria.

8 Founding Titan

The Founding Titan is the most powerful of all Titans and is only able to be used by someone of Royal Eldia Blood. It can control humans and Titans by screaming, except for people of a few other Royal bloodlines such as the Ackermans.

The Founding Titan is currently in possession of Eren, who got it from Grisha. Grisha got it from eating Frieda Reiss, the last royal inheritor of the Founding Titan power. Since Eren is not of royal blood, he cannot fully control the power, but he can use it to some extent, such as when he controlled the Titans in Shiniganshina.

7 Attack Titan

The Attack Titan is known for always "fighting for the freedom of Eldia", and is currently in possession of Eren Jaeger. He inherited it from Grisha Jaeger, who in turn had got it after eating Eren Krueger.

RELATED: Attack On Titan Basement Reveal: The Eldians' Origin & Marley

The Attack Titan has great physical endurance and fighting capacity. Unlike the other Titans, he has no special or unique abilities of his own but has learned the hardening ability with the use of a special serum.

6 Beast Titan

The Beast Titan is one of a kind, having an ape-like structure and fur over its body. It's one of the tallest Titans at 17m and is extremely smart, being able to control Titans to a great extent.

RELATED: Attack On Titan: Grisha Yeager's Manga Backstory Explained

The Titan is currently in possession of Zeke Jaeger, Grisha's first son, who is working for Marley to capture Eren and gain control of his Titan Powers. His whereabouts are currently unknown, and he is still believed to be on the Island.

5 Colossal Titan

The largest Titan at 60m is the Colossal Titan, which has the power to give off steam from its body and transform back to a human fast as lightning.

The Colossal Titan power is currently in possession of Armin, who got it after almost dying, and eating Bertholdt. Armin is believed to have the same powers as Bertholdt, though his Titan form is yet to be seen.

4 Female Titan

The Female Titan is an intelligent Titan that can harden parts of its body to defend itself against attacks. The power is currently held by Annie Leonhart, a cadet which had trained with Eren and joined the MP Regiment.

After getting captured, Annie encased herself in an indestructible diamond-like cocoon, to avoid getting interrogated. She is currently in the possession of the Scout Regiment and is under constant surveillance.

3 Ymir's (Jaw) Titan

Ymir's Titan is one of the intelligent Titans and has a high amount of speed and agility. The current possessor of this Power is Ymir, another fellow cadet. She got it from eating Marcel, a friend of Bertholdt, Annie and Reiner's.

RELATED: Attack On Titan 2: How To Save All Dead Characters

It is unknown where Ymir currently is, as she was last seen taking off with Bertholdt and Reiner to escape the Scout regiment. She was helping them kidnap Eren and Historia.

2 Cart Titan

The most mysterious of all the Titans, the Cart Titan has a quadrupedal structure which is uncommon to the Intelligent Titans. It acts as a scout and mule for the Beast Titan, and like it, can speak in its Titan Form.

It is unknown which unique powers, if any, the Cart Titan possesses, or who has the Cart Titan Power, but it is likely someone from Marley, as they are working with Zeke, Reiner, and Bertholdt. Perhaps season 4 will give a backstory to this mysterious Titan.

1 Unknown Ninth Titan

The Ninth Titan is yet to be revealed in the anime and is likely going to be the Warhammer Titan, as seen in the manga. The Warhammer Titan can create weapons from parts of its body.

Besides having a unique power of creating weapons from Titan skin, The Warhammer Titan will be an integral part of the story and will definitely be featured in the upcoming season.

Attack On Titan Season 4 Confirms Ymir's Fate

Attack On Titan'sfourth season might not have featured the Survey Corps in all its glory, instead deciding to follow the exploits of the Eldian soldiers in the employ of the nation of Marley, but it gave us a look into the ultimate fate of Ymir, the Jaw Titan. The story of Ymir was a tragic one overall, but the fate that lay in wait for her might have been even more so as we had the opportunity to learn what Marley had done to the former friend of Historia once she returned to her homeland alongside Zeke the Beast Titan!

Ymir was revealed to hold the power of the Jaw Titan in the second season of Attack On Titan's anime, revealing that she had been exiled from Marley for being brought into a cult for the Founding Titan of the same name. Luckily enough, Ymir had eaten the previous Jaw Titan in her Titan form, regaining her humanity and attempting to build a life for herself on the island of Paradis, in which she was able to come into contact with Historia, the soon to be Queen of the civilization within the walls. Though Ymir joined the Survey Corps, that didn't stop her from hiding her Titan power from her friends.

Attack On Titan Ymir Fate Season Four Anime

When Ymir revealed her Titan power to help save Historia, she eventually was kidnapped by Reiner and Bertholdt who were attempting to take her and Eren Jaeger back to the country of Marley. Still trying to be with Historia however, Ymir would only agree if they kidnapped the blond-haired royal family member but she ultimately decided to venture forth to Marley without her one-time friend.

With the premiere of Season Four, we see a new Jaw Titan spring into action, attacking Marley's enemies with a decidedly different look than the one that Ymir had sported. What this means of course is that Ymir's life was made forfeit and she was eaten by the new inheritor of the power, losing her time in this world in the process. Though Ymir's death isn't shown on screen, it's a given that the friend of Historia is no longer in the land of the living.

~ Ymir to Historia before revealing her Titan powers.

Ymir is a mysterious character of the anime/manga series Attack on Titan and a main character in the Clash of the Titans arc/Season 2 of the series.

She is usually seen with Historia Reiss (formerly known by her fake name Christa Lenz) who is her love interest. She inherited the power of the Jaw Titan from Marcel Galliard. Ymir was named after Ymir Fritz by a scammer to present her as a member of the Fritz family to an Eldian cult. Ymir was actually a fraud, as she had no royal blood and she was only a homeless Eldian little girl taken from the streets by a scammer. After escaping, her sixty years of imprisonment as a Titan, she made her way to the Walls where she joined the 104th Cadet Corps.

She is voiced by Saki Fujita in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Elizabeth Maxwell in the English version of the anime. Maxwell also voices Winter Schnee in RWBY and Phoebe in Battleborn.

Background

Many years ago, a orphan little girl was found by a unknown man in the streets of a Marleyan city. He gave her the name "Ymir", a bed, food and a fancy dress. Because of her name, many adults start to kneel and worship her. She felt so happy to give them happiness and kept her role as "Ymir". Several years later, the people of Marley started calling her demon and even the man who had given her name claimed that he had been deceived by her. However, she still tried to keep her role and tried to save the people who did worship her, but she was not successful. She was hated by the people in the city that throwed rocks on her. The girl and her worshippers were taken as prisoners by the Marleyan military. Ymir and her people were injected with the titan serum by the Marleyan soldiers, and transformed into mindless titans to be banished to Paradis.

60 years later, still as a mindless titan, she encountered the young Warriors Reiner, Bertolt, Annie, and Marcel. When she ate Marcel, she transformed back into human, obtaining his Titan shifter powers. After she opened her eyes, she finally felt free of being a mindless titan for several years. She then began a new life within the Sheena wall. She survived begging and stealing food or money. It was during this time that she overheard conversation between members of the Church of the Walls, and learned that a girl with a false name was forced to join the Cadet Corps. This girl would later reveal herself to be Historia Reiss. Ymir's interest in Historia led her to enlist in the Cadets to search for her.

Story

Ymir was initially a selfish, cynical, exploitative, confrontational, argumentative, and uncooperative girl. She very often criticized people for being untrue to themselves, as when she berated Sasha Braus, who developed an extremely polite and formal way of speaking to hide her native accent. However, sometime later she reveals a kinder side, especially towards Christa.

By her own admission, Ymir's greatest fear was actually dying. This turned out to be a lie, and she eventually chooses to return with Reiner and Bertolt to their homeland, so they wouldn't leave empty-handed. Having failed to deliver both Eren and Historia, Reiner and Bertolt received an ultimatum by the Marley government but Ymir payed with her life.

As the story progress, it is revealed that she is actually brave, selfless, and quite emotional. This is shown when Ymir accepts Reiner and Bertolt's offer to return to their hometown in exchange for a pardon. She also has shown regret over eating Marcel (even though she had no control over herself during her time as a mindless Titan and has no memory of the event). But she states that she is very thankful to them, because their presence allowed her to be released from her Titan form, which she deemed as an endless nightmare.

Ymir is in love with Christa/Historia and is very protective of her. She openly expresses her feelings when she promises Christa that they will marry after the war. During the Female Titan arc','she worries about Christa and asks Bertolt where she is. Later, before she leaves to save Bertolt from the Pure Titans, she apologizes to her and gently caresses her head while in her Titan form. As a prisoner of the Marleyans, Ymir writes a love letter to her, revealing all her tragic backstory, telling that she will probably die soon and once again apologizing that she didn't marry her.

Although she hated the government of Marley, Ymir was actually neutral in the war between Marley and Paradis. She called Eren childish and was the only potential ally of the Survey Corps who opposed to kill Reiner and Bertolt, calling the two of them "small fry". She decided to help them against Mikasa and the others, even tried to convince Historia to go to their hometown together. This because Ymir knows the unfortunate position of the Warriors as Eldian pawns. She already guessed that the destruction of the Walls had been planned by the Marley's power. And also knowing about the short lifespan of a Titan shifter and how horribly Eldians are treated in Marley, she felt sorry for her 2 kidnappers. She had to chose between staying with her beloved Historia or following Bertolt and Reiner to avoid them to suffer punishment for returning home empty-handed. However, she decided to let Historia stay in Paradis, much to Bertolt's anger at first, only to find out that Eren had the Coordinate power after all, thus making the kidnapping of Historia pointless and Eren the only target.

She sacrificed herself by following Reiner and Bertolt back to Marley where she was eaten by Galliard, Marcel's younger brother, in order to give him the power of Jaws Titan. She felt that she owed Marcel's life and power to his Warrior friends and brother. Bertolt and Galliard were both sorry for her unfortunate position as an Eldian and Galliard had no hatred towards her, knowing that it was beyond the control of a normal Titan to avoid eating people. Galliard thanked her for giving back his brother's Titan.

Along with Grisha, Bertolt, Eren Kruger, the Galliard brothers and Tom Ksaver, Ymir is one of the deceased Titan shifters that Zeke manages to free from Eren's control, allowing them to fend off the army of Titan shifters of the past while the Warriors and Survey Corps destroy Eren's main Founding Titan body.
