Lexus RX

Model strengths:

Smooth on-road presence; good interior room; standard features; safety

Model changes:

The Lexus RX is redesigned for The new model is about one inch bigger in almost every exterior dimension, and exterior styling has been subtly redone. The interior is all-new as well and more user friendly. The model's powertrain has been revamped as well, and the L V6 of the RX now boasts horsepower, up from the previous hp. A 6-speed automatic replaces last year's 5-speed. Inside, the luxurious cabin benefits from a more user-friendly design, highlighted by the available all-new Remote Touch, an intuitive and ergonomically designed controller that puts the driver in command of the RX's many navigation and audio features. Rear cargo room has been increased slightly, thanks in part to a repackaging of the new rear suspension. Anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and ten airbags are standard on the RX.

Model value:

Lexus invented the luxury cross-over segment with the RX in , and it has since been one of the Japanese carmaker's best sellers. Now in its third generation, the RX carries forth with more of what makes it so popular--attractive styling, great safety ratings, lots of luxury in a spacious cabin, and a smooth, carlike ride. Improved standard features in the all-new model, as well as a 3,lb towing capacity, make it a smart choice amongst the many other luxury SUV models that have flooded the market in recent years.

Model overview:

For , Lexus introduces its third-generation RX luxury cross-over, a four-door, 5-seater that benefits from a host of thoughtful touches that set it apart from the crowd. The RX is powered by a 4-cam, L V6 with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which makes horsepower. It is available in either front- or all-wheel drive, and the latter employs a limited-slip Active Torque Control differential with variable torque split for maximum traction. The RX puts its power to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic with sport-shift and snow modes. The FWD RX is rated at 18 mpg city / 25 mpg highway and is classified as an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II).Exterior styling is mildly different in the latest RX, as Lexus saw no need to revolutionize its popular SUV. The RX expands in all directions by about an inch, which translates to slightly improved spaciousness in the passenger compartment. Suspension is independent all around, and the progressive electronic power steering system is speed-sensing for enhanced control. The AWD model has a towing capacity of 3, pounds when properly equipped. But for the number of wheels that drive them, the FWD and AWD RX models come identically equipped. Standard features include fog lamps, heated mirrors, cruise control, power windows, an AM/FM CD changer stereo, dual-zone climate control, maple or walnut wood trim, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, way adjustable driver's seat, and reclining, sliding rear seats with a 40/20/40 split.Options abound on the RX, and it's not hard to outfit the SUV with luxury features usually reserved for sedans costing two or three times as much. Popular amenities include heated and cool perforated leather seating, power moonroof, and a memory system for seating, mirrors, climate control and steering wheel position. On the gizmo side, dynamic radar cruise control adjusts the RX's speed based on surrounding traffic, a Heads-up Display projects speed, audio, and more on the windshield before the driver, and HDD Navigation with voice commands gets you where you need to go. A unique feature of the navigation system is the new Remote Touch, an ergonomically designed controller that gives the user command of the RX's many navigation features. An LCD display completes the package, and will also display video from the back-up camera, if so equipped. Safety features set the RX apart, and standard are 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, stability and traction control, driver and passenger front, side seat-mounted, and side curtain airbags, as well as side curtain and side seat-mounted airbags for rear passengers. Available safety features include Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), which integrates braking, steering, and stability and traction control to help keep the RX planted in turns, as well as Pre-Collision, a feature of the Heads-up Display that radar-senses the possibility of an accident and prepares the vehicle by pre-tensioning the seat belts and applying the brakes.

First Drive: Lexus ES

Playing on Its Strengths

Lexus ES Full Overview

Okay, the Lexus ES isn't the most exciting luxury sedan money can buy. Those who want spectacular handling should look at a BMW 3 Series or an Infiniti G before the ES. However, Lexus' entry-level sedan is the best-selling vehicle in the automaker's car lineup and near the top (behind the 3 and the G) in its class in In addition, the ES was given a major redesign for , so the changes are only minor for

On the outside, there are a few styling revisions: a new grille, headlights, bumper with new foglights, and taillights. The side mirrors, revised for , now come with integrated turn-signal lights. There are two new wheel designs as well, both inch.

Those who enjoy the experience of the ES will not be disappointed with the model. As was the case before, power comes from a horsepower, pound-foot DOHC valve liter V-6 with dual variable valve timing, backed by a six-speed automatic. This is still the only engine/transmission choice, and the ES continues to be front drive only. When we tested the ES, it reached 60 mph in seconds and took feet to stop from that same speed, and we have no reason to believe the performance would be dramatically different for even though Lexus estimates its 0-to time to be seconds.

Also not all that different from is the way the car drives. This is more freeway cruiser than canyon carver, and it seems everything about this car is more biased toward a smooth ride than making the driver's heart beat faster. Acceleration is quick off the line without being startling, and transmission shifts are nearly imperceptible. When taking turns at speed, the suspension is soft, and there is some body roll. However, twisty roads are not where the ES does its best work. Where the sedan really shines is in driving comfort on straight roads. Lexus wants to make sure you don't feel too much road irregularity, and the suspension does a fine job of keeping that unpleasantness out of the car.

The ES has also traditionally come with plenty of amenities, and more were added for the new model year. Rain-sensing wipers were made standard equipment; also standard for are driver-seat memory and leather seating, Safety Connect, USB port, XM satellite radio, and rear-seat side airbags (10 airbags total). The interior received a few new touches, including a new wood/metal trim piece on the dash, new steering wheel buttons, and contrast stitching on the seats-and, hurray, Lexus finally got rid of the tape player. New features include a new cover on the center console, which adds a bit more storage space, two new coat hooks in the rear seating area, Eco light in the I.P., along with new nav software and new Bluetooth audio and phone features.

The soft suspension does a great job of absorbing bumps and potholes; combine that with the quiet cabin, and this is a car that would be a terrific place to burn miles on the Interstate. It's a cross-country driver, one that won't cause you to venture off a lane freeway for twisting two-lanes, but we can't imagine there would be much fatigue or soreness after several hours behind the wheel. The ES continues to be a comfortable, quiet, capable sedan that is ideal for the open road. It isn't as much fun in the turns as a BMW or Infiniti, but for those who spend a lot of time sitting in traffic or on long commutes, this is a great way to do it. And the revisions add more amenities to an already well-equipped car.

Be Smart, Check in Advance. CARFAX — Your Vehicle History.

CARFAX — Your Vehicle History Expert

Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you, but that's not the case when buying a used car. As an independent vehicle history provider, at CARFAX we've made it our mission to tell you everything you need to know by uncovering as many events as possible from the previous life of a used car. Our primary goal is to help you get to know your next car from the inside out before deciding to make an investment that will be part of you and your family's everyday life. We believe your next car shouldn't be hiding anything from you.

CARFAX Vehicle History Reports contain over 28 billion historical records from 20 European countries, the US and Canada, which are updated daily with new information.

Even if you live in a country we don't collect vehicle data from, it's still always worth checking the Vehicle Identification Number without obligation. The used car import and export market is booming and many owners would be surprised to find out exactly what happened to their vehicle during its previous life abroad.

Privacy for Customers — Transparency over Vehicles

Let's be clear: Although we strive to find every detail of a vehicle's life so far, we are focused only on the vehicle's history, and do not collect any information on previous owners. The information we provide relates solely to the vehicle, its odometer reading, any accidents that have been covered up, where the vehicle comes from and much more — it never gets personal. We've uncovered irreparable damage several times in the past, but other times our vehicle history checks draw a blank — and sometimes that's actually a good thing.

Second Hand — Not Second Best

Did you know that considerably more used cars are sold than new cars? We think this second-hand system is nothing short of fantastic. However, it goes without saying that it gives rise to different methods and tactics: Some sellers will disguise a car that's been in an accident under a fresh coat of paint, tamper with the odometer or conceal theft. This is one of the less appealing aspects of buying second hand. Our goal is to establish trusting relationships between buyers and sellers, since this is the best way to help customers make the right decision. Your new car should be reliable and make you feel safe, as well as make you feel like you haven't paid too much.

But more than anything else, we don't want you or your family unknowingly sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle that isn't % safe. This is why we strive to take these vehicles off the road, which not only makes the used car market safer but our streets safer too.

CARFAX — 35+ Years of Experience in Vehicle Histories

CARFAX was founded in the US in and expanded into Europe in Around team members spread across six European offices process vehicle information from 22 countries.

Fostering strategic partnerships with registration authorities, law enforcement agencies, government departments, insurance companies, inspection centers and numerous other leading companies around the world has enabled us to compile a unique international database for vehicle histories. We use this database to help make the used car market more transparent. We give everyone in the process of buying a used car access to what is currently the world's most comprehensive source for vehicle history reports, and is growing day by day.

We remain neutral and independent despite our partnerships — our sole purpose is help customers make an informed choice and ensure their safety and the safety of their family. This includes never collecting any personal details — we do not accept any PII from data sources amongst the information we provide about a vehicle. We ensure that data protection laws are observed at all times. Furthermore, we always collect our data in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks — in all the countries in which we are active. We expressly distance ourselves from illegal activities such as data theft, scraping and hacking.
