Clever Cabinet Kitchen Organization With A Freestanding Pantry

Having a pantry can really come in handy when you want that additional storage space. From cans and jars to pots and pans, a pantry is a great place to store stuff out of the way, but always have it close to you in the kitchen whenever needed.

Freestanding Pantry

However, not all homes are equipped with a pantry and the lack of that additional space is often felt and regretted. What if there was a way to have your pantry anyway? There is a wonderful piece of furniture called a freestanding pantry, so let’s dig deeper into this type of product and discover how to choose it, where to place it, and what products are good to buy.

How to Choose a Freestanding Pantry

When it comes to choosing your own freestanding pantry, you’ll pretty much have to pay attention to the same things that you would pay attention to if you bought other types of kitchen furniture. These include:

The materials and construction

For the most part, freestanding pantries are made from different types of wood. Of course, you can opt for massive wooden cabinets if you want to, but these are really expensive and rarely a preferred option for storing stuff. Some of the most convenient options at your disposal when it comes to freestanding pantries are those made from manufactured wood. You are also likely to find some models that have wooden shelves and metal sides, but these options aren’t considered to be as aesthetically pleasing as the ones made entirely from manufactured wood.

Weight capacity

Manufactured wood is a perfectly good choice when it comes to choosing your freestanding pantry materials. However, it is also considered to be weaker compared to other types of wood, which makes it even more important for you to pay attention to the weight capacity of this piece of furniture. This number will reflect the number of pounds the structure can safely support without cracking, bending, or collapsing. If you’re looking to place a lot of heavy things inside this pantry (like filled cans, jars, or stacks of china), then you will need to prioritize pantries that have a higher weight limit.

Dimension & storage capacity

These two characteristics go hand in hand, and they are different than the weight capacity of this piece of furniture. What’s the point of having a freestanding pantry which can support 300 pounds in weight if you have a measly 3 shelves and a very small piece of furniture overall?

The dimensions of your future pantry also need to take into account your existing kitchen space. It is highly recommended that you first get an idea of where you want to place your pantry and then, with those measurements written down, you can start searching for models that fit.

Most people opt for a freestanding pantry to store their small appliances and dinnerware, so the space between two shelves should be generous enough to allow you to store such items. You don’t want to spend money on a freestanding pantry only to discover that your blender doesn’t fit in there.

Where to Place It & Organizing Tips

The next important matter that we have to discuss is where to place your pantry and how to organize it. This is important because there is a right and a wrong way to take advantage of the storage space provided by the pantry, so these tips and bits of information might come in handy in saving you from frustrations when you’re just trying to make your own life easier.

  • A freestanding pantry doesn’t necessarily have to be in the kitchen if you don’t have the required space for it. However, it should still be placed in the proximity of the cooking area, or else it can be more of a nuisance than a helf. The best place for a freestanding pantry, especially if you use it to store food or kitchen appliances that might be needed while you cook, is no further than 3 steps from the area where the food is being prepared.
  • When it comes to placement, it is often preferred if you place the freestanding pantry on the opposite side of the room compared to where your refrigerator is currently placed. This rule should be kept in mind only if you’re particularly interested in symmetry and the aesthetics of your kitchen.
  • If you use your freestanding pantry to store snacks and drinks for your children, you want the pantry and the refrigerator to be placed in spots where children can access them without having to cross the food preparation area. You want your kids to stay as far away as possible from the stove and the food preparation counter, where all the knives and other sharp things are located.
  • It is always a good idea to opt for a freestanding pantry with adjustable shelves. This means that if there are ever taller items that you need to place in your pantry cabinets, you can simply remove the shelf and place it higher or lower, depending on the configuration.
  • It’s very important to choose a freestanding pantry where you have easy access to all the shelves. A person short in stature surely knows the struggles or having to reach for something on the top shelf, so there really is no point in buying a tall freestanding pantry if you have to grab a chair every time you want something from the top shelf.

Freestanding Pantry FAQ

How much does it cost to build a kitchen pantry cabinet?

Naturally, ordering a custom-made freestanding kitchen pantry is also an option, but it’s a more costly one. Depending on the size of the pantry you want to build, the details that you want, the number of shelves, etc. the end price will be higher or lower. Every additional feature, as well as every square inch of additional material used is also going to add to the end price. That being said, a freestanding pantry can cost as much as $5,000, but it can also be as low as a few hundred dollars.

Are there other alternatives to freestanding pantries?

If you can’t afford a freestanding pantry and a walk-in pantry is definitely not an options, there are few tricks that you can turn to for additional storage space. With a few wooden planks, you can improvise your own shelves for extra storage. You can also repurpose some older furniture pieces and convert them into pantry/kitchen cabinets.

Bottom Line

As you can see, there are plenty of options in terms of size and design if you’re looking to optimize your storage space by adding a freestanding pantry to your furniture collection. Just make sure you place it in the proximity of the cooking area to maximize the benefits you can obtain from this pantry, as the goal is to have the products you need in the kitchen at your disposal. The rest is a matter of your personal taste and what style of furniture matches your current kitchen setup.

Qualities to Consider

1) Size?

Size is by far the most important variable when considering which pantry cabinet to go with. To make the search simple, we've placed our top reviewed models in order of decreasing size. Our tallest models start at approximately 73" tall (just over 6 feet) and our shortest at 32" tall (just under 3 ft).

If you're unsure how tall you want to go, consider what you'll be putting in the pantry. Is it just for food? Will you be storing pots, pans, or kitchen appliances in it? We always recommend going a little bigger than the storage space you anticipate using. This will help prepare you for the never ceasing accumulation of "stuff" in the kitchen.

2) Closed or Open?

There are both closed, open and partially open pantry cabinets to choose from.

Closed Pantries - Good solely for shelf stable foods and items you want out of sight.

Partially Open - Great for both shelf stable food, fruit bowls, microwaves, coffee stations, etc. Good for those who want options down the line.

Fully Open - Best for fruit bowls, microwaves, coffee stations, etc.

3) Material?

You'll find the majority of the cabinet pantries to be made of medium density fiberboard. MDF is made by taking the wood chippings and sawdust of various industrial plants, heating them to great temperatures, and compressing them until they form a somewhat uniform material.

While some people argue this material to be "cheap" and "fake," it's ultimately the greatest way to make durable furniture without charging people an arm and a leg. MDF is also much lighter than your typical oak and maple, making it easier to maneuver.

4) Price?

One of the most important variables in our decision is finding a reasonable price for a stellar product. You'll find the price range for all the models below to vary between $80 and $600. We know that everyone has a different budget, and we do our best to find quality products no matter the price.

5) Anti-Toppling Device?

You'll find some of the models below have an anti-toppling device. This just means the cabinet has some kind of extra security to keep it from falling. Most of the time, the manufacturers will include something to secure the cabinet pantry to the wall. We recommend it only to help diminish the chance of an accident.

Freestanding Pantry Options

Your kitchen, no matter the size or budget, can be organized and made clean, functional and efficient with the right freestanding pantry options.

A relatively inexpensive fix to add more storage and keep items separate and within easy reach, freestanding pantries are the perfect alternative to built-in pantry cabinets and closets, and they come in a variety of options. Units range from those with just a few shelves to large pieces of furniture that cover entire walls. You can pick one up at any store that sells home and kitchen accessories, or even find a used one that'll work well in your kitchen. Just be sure to measure the space where you plan to put it so you know for sure it will fit when you get it home.

Deciding what type of material you want your freestanding pantry to be made of and what your budget is for it will also make it easier to choose the one that is right for you. Freestanding pantries with wire shelves work well for organizing canned and dried goods, as well as pots and pans, and small appliances. The wire material makes everything easy to see and gives your kitchen a clean, contemporary look. Stainless steel freestanding pantries also have an air of professionalism and efficiency.

A wooden shelving unit is also a good option, as it has the tone and style of something more classic and traditional. Wooden units often look more like furniture and give your kitchen a homier feel.

Plastic pantry units are an inexpensive option if you're on a tight budget and simply want something functional you can put together easily. They can be bought at discount retail stores and snap together in a variety of sizes.

Choosing an armoire or bookcase for your freestanding pantry is an interesting new take on a classic piece of furniture. It can stand against a wall and give your kitchen character and warmth. This type of furniture can be bought new or you can have some fun scouring yard sales and thrift stores for something you can restore.

Rollout drawers and shelves can easily be added to most freestanding pantries for a more customized look. Other accessories like spice racks, dividers, lazy Susans, see-through storage containers, baskets and bins are smart additions to organize your pantry with your own personal style.
