Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Concludes Aether Zombies Story With Final Episode

Call of Duty's Zombies narrative called the "Aether" story has been going on for years now, but it's finally coming to an end with one last episode released this week. The new Operation for Black Ops 4 called "Dark Divide" brought about the release of the "Tag der Toten" Zombies experience. It's the final piece in the story that's encompassed different sets of characters found throughout the games and the many Zombies maps, and it's live now on the PlayStation 4.

Though the Zombies mode has occasionally told other stories, the Aether story is the long-running one which most Black Ops players have dabbled in at least once. It's the one with Dempsey, Takeo, Richtofen, and Nikolai, and it's become somewhat hard to follow over the years if you haven't been keeping up with the storyline. Easter egg hunts, community discussions, and all manner of speculation has attempted to solve the mysteries of the story throughout the years, and Zombies fans will undoubtedly be scouring the latest map for similar revelations.

This conclusion to the Aether story is also fittingly the last Zombies installment for Black Ops 4. It's got some new weapons and items for players to try out along with some callbacks to other characters.

"'Tag der Toten' delivers a huge range of gameplay features in this final Black Ops 4 Zombies installment, including ziplines, flingers, platforming, freezing water, extreme verticality, underwater areas, and even snowballs as functional weapons!" Treyarch said about the new Zombies experience. "And it wouldn't be a fitting finale without multiple devastating Wonder Weapons, including the Wunderwaffe DG Scharfschütze shock rifle and the chilling new Tundra Gun for when your squad can't take the heat. Long-time Zombies fans will also be happy to get their hands on the explosive Matryoshka Dolls, modeled in the likenesses of our classic Zombies protagonists."

Outside of Tag der Toten, the Operation also adds a new perk called "Blaze Phase" which lets players brush aside zombies in their path with a fiery result. Other new features that can be used on any Zombies map include the Power Vacuum elixir that causes power-ups to spawn more frequently for a short time and the Secret Shopper elixir which lets its users buy ammo off the wall for any gun you have.

Call of Duty Zombies: The Case for Bringing Back The Chaos Storyline

By Richard Warren

ShareTweetEmail

Call of Duty Zombies’ Chaos Story was ahead of its time, and Treyarch should heavily consider bringing it back at some point in the future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies is undeniably the most divisive appearance of the survival mode ever. Many fans shared disapproval of a new perk system that did away with fan favorites like Juggernog. Though the hope was to remove crutch perks that were considered must-buy, the decision ultimately stripped personality from the mode due to the lack of unique perk machines and jingles. While the game boasted the finale of the year long Aether story, all Aether maps were remakes, making the gameplay side of the ending feel stale. Lastly, and most importantly, the game launched in such a rough state that content creators for Zombies soured on the mode — with this negativity spreading throughout the community like a plague.

Despite these problems, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies has one massive, underappreciated strength: the Chaos storyline. Though splitting the maps between two separate narratives was a poor idea, as it saw all the resources and fresh ideas going to the Chaos storyline, the result was a series of excellent maps that helped the fresh plot get off on the right foot. The characters were interesting, and the use of different mythologies was exciting and different — allowing for things that could not be done in the Aether or Dark Aether stories. With this in mind, the Chaos story deserves to make a return in a future Treyarch Call of Duty game.

Why Chaos Never Got A Proper Chance

With Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies ending the story arcs of characters players had grown attached to for an entire decade, it is easy to understand why nobody cared about the Chaos storyline when it released. When choosing between paying attention to a narrative that has been built up over several games or an entirely new, disconnected take, the choice seems obvious. Unfortunately, this doomed the Chaos story, with Treyarch fighting an uphill battle the second they put it in the same game as the Aether plot.

What makes this so disappointing is the fact that the Chaos storyline got off to a strong start. From the get-go, the cast had more depth than the original Zombies characters. While the Primis versions of Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo, and Nikolai were excellent, layered characters, the Ultimis versions from World at War and Black Ops 1 lacked depth — functioning only as goofy stereotypes of their respective countries. However, the Chaos crew was different, with each member of the group having a complex past and a motivation to help the crew leader Scarlett rescue her father.

The problem with the Chaos characters is not the fault of the writers or the cast themselves, but simply a lack of interest caused by a love for what came before. Had Treyarch focused entirely on providing a proper finale for the Aether story in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, with fully original maps and the old systems in place, the Zombies mode would have been looked at fondly. With the story closed off, players could move on and fully embrace the Chaos crew in a new game, focusing on their story instead of worrying about what will happen to the characters they know and love. Telling two stories at the same time made the Chaos narrative dead on arrival, and while this cannot be fixed in Black Ops 4, Treyarch can give the characters another shot in a future game.

Resolving Ancient Evil’s Cliffhanger

Another thing that makes the Chaos Story’s premature ending disappointing is that the narrative ended on a cliffhanger. After completing trials for various gods which saw the Chaos characters destroying the eye of Odin, fighting zombified war elephants, and taking down werewolves, Scarlett and the crew track her father’s captors to Delphi. A Greek map that leans heavily into the most iconic mythology there is, players ride the horse Pegasus and do battle in Mount Olympus during Ancient Evil's main quest.

The easter egg trophy for Ancient Evil is named Greek tragedy, an apt name for what happens as the map’s story comes to a close. Not only does Bruno turn on Shaw, with the brainwashed figure killing him before resurrecting him and turning the chemist to his side, but Scarlett finds out her father is already dead. Turned to stone by none other than the legendary gorgon Medusa, the villain puts Scarlett into a coma as the final cutscene comes to an end, with Diego being the final uncorrupt and awake crew member.

While this Call of Duty Zombies easter egg was clearly meant to be a season finale and not the end of the entire story, the Chaos story’s lack of popularity makes it seem more likely than not that players will never know what happened to Diego and Scarlett. A bummer of an ending that sees a new villain appear and completely succeed while punishing the heroes, this cliffhanger should have been resolved in future maps. Even if it is for one map only or in a spinoff comic series the Chaos story should reappear so that this can be addressed.

Keeping The Strengths Of Chaos Alive

Beyond having a cliffhanger and a cast of characters with untapped potential, the Chaos story allows for gameplay opportunities that the Aether and Dark Aether stories do not. By leaning into mythologies, players were able to fight gladiators in IX and vampires in Dead of the Night, while the six-armed Gegenees proved to be a thrilling mini boss in Ancient Evil. Weapon types do not need to be rooted in science, either, as players are able to wield the powers of several gods in Ancient Evil and paralyze their foes with a scorpion in IX.

Mini bosses like the Blightfather should not be trapped inside the fun-but-niche Dead Ops Arcade forever, while awesome shields like Apollo’s Will from Ancient Evil deserve to be usable once again. The Homonculus was a hilarious alternative to the monkey bomb, and the numerous upgrade phases for the Alistair’s Annihilator make it one of the best Wonder Weapons in Zombies history. With side easter eggs that were just as strong as the Aether story’s best, as well as a narrative that was easier to follow than the classic Zombies story, there is so much about the Chaos universe that works — even though Black Ops 4 Zombies did not.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Dark Aether story is off to a fine start, as it is great to see Samantha Maxis becoming a focus again, taking a short break to close off the Chaos Story would be a welcome surprise. While Black Ops 4 Zombies made several unpopular decisions, nearly everything that worked about the mode can be attributed to the Chaos story. Truly unique maps like IX and Ancient Evil deserve to be treated with respect, and those that enjoyed the Chaos universe that was being built up should not be left to wonder what could have been. The Chaos content was not just good; it was great, and it deserves to be treated as such.

Though set in the ‘80s, the origins of “Die Maschine” (pronounced “dee mah-SHEEN-eh” for all you non-German speakers out there) reach even further back in history. The discovery of a World War II-era experiment known as Projekt Endstation threatens to set off a new arms race between the superpowers, as each side attempts to harness the dark power at the heart of it all.

“Everything that happened in the Aether Story actually happened. At the end of Black Ops 4, our heroes – in their various incarnations – sacrificed themselves in order to collapse the multiverse and banish the evil they bravely fought to the Dark Aether. They hoped their actions would create a new world a singular reality. One free from the forces of darkness that had plagued their existence.

They were half right.” – Craig Houston, Lead Writer

For the first time in a Black Ops game, Zombies will blur the narrative lines between modes. Instead of being locked to one of four characters, you’ll play as the Operators from Multiplayer and even some familiar faces from the single-player Campaign, including Russell Adler, Lawrence Sims, and even Sgt. Frank Woods himself.

Yes, you read that right.

REQUIEM AND OMEGA

These operatives are part of Requiem, a CIA-backed international response team led by Russian-American Grigori Weaver – another familiar face for long-time Black Ops players. Tasked with investigating and suppressing the abnormal phenomena occurring in the facility below, they will be guided by Weaver on their mission to find the truth.

“Requiem features a diverse supporting cast drawn from the finest minds across various military and scientific fields. They, along with Weaver, will help advise players on their journey.” - Corky Lehmkuhl, Studio Creative Director

Throughout their mission, Requiem team members will also come up against the Omega Group, a mysterious, Soviet-led organization hell-bent on researching (and possibly exploiting) the unexplainable anomalies manifesting around the world. And among the full cast of characters, you won’t be sure who you can trust and who to keep an eye on. One contact in particular – Sam – has access to KGB intel that may prove more than a little useful.

LET’S TALK GAMEPLAY

In many ways, Treyarch is bringing Zombies gameplay back to the foundations that players loved in previous Black Ops games, with some new twists and improvements along the way. You’ll find upgradable fan-favorite Perks including Juggernog, Speed Cola, and Quick Revive – complete with classic jingles and redesigned Perk machines – as well as the all-new Elemental Pop Perk to modify your ammo types in a pinch.

THE BLACK OPS 4 ZOMBIES CINEMATIC STORYLINE (ALL CUTSCENES)

Black Ops 5: Zombies News, Characters, Chaos Story and Details for COD

With the news that popular developer Treyarch will be creating the latest instalment of the Call of Duty franchise, the community are excited by the return of a Zombie mode.

Treyarch is widely considered as the king of Call of Duty titles in recent times, most notably for their Zombies mocde, dating all the way back to its introduction back on Call of Duty: World at War.

In this article, we take a look at the latest news surrounding the potential addition of a Zombies mode into Call of Duty: Black Ops 5, the rumoured name for COD

See what’s planned for COD by watching below!

What Do We Know So Far?

After the anti-climatic conclusion to the main Zombies storyline back in DLC 4 of Black Ops 4, it is unlikely that we will be seeing any of those characters making a return to Zombies.

With the story ending, it is likely that a new Zombies mode will be a brand-new story if it does feature in the new game.

In June , TheGamingRevolution reported that Treyarch was debating whether to include characters from the COD campaign alongside the characters from the Aether story.

Assuming that this is correct information, COD Zombies will have a brand-new storyline, potentially including campaign characters and some familiar faces for that hit of nostalgia.

Characters

As mentioned earlier, it has been reported that characters from the COD campaign will feature in an original storyline.

There is also potential of a return of the characters from the Aether story, implying that the new storyline could be either some form of cross-over with the campaign or it is going to be a complete reboot of the whole Zombies experience.

Chaos Story

The release of the Ancient Evil map seemingly suggested that the Chaos story for Zombies would continue throughout the cycle of Black Ops 4.

But after two maps, the Chaos story appears to be dead in the water, with nothing clear surrounding its ending.

According to many players, Activision did not like the Chaos story, implying that this is the reason as to why the story has yet to be concluded by Treyarch.

With the release of COD slowly approaching and new information surrounding the game coming to the forefront in every other week, could there be a chance for the Chaos story to be revived on the new release? Only time will tell!

Details

Other than the high chance of an all-new storyline taking place for COD , details surrounding Zombies has been relatively quiet.

The main rumour surrounding COD Zombies is a total reboot of the Aether story, taking it in a totally new direction from the previous story, which was rounded off during Black Ops 4.

With Jason Blundell, to many in the community seen as the father of Zombies, leaving Treyarch it is unclear what direction we can expect the mode to take.

In recent years, PlayStation has held an exclusivity deal on DLC, particularly around the Zombie mode - this content has always comes first to PlayStation 5 with Xbox Series X receiving it a later.

Modern Warfare changes the game in that all DLC arrives at the same time - assuming there will be cross-play in COD as well, zombie DLC should hit all platforms simultaneously.

It will certainly be interesting to see what Treyarch has in store for the Zombies community in

Silver?

A set of rumored multiplayer, campaign, Warzone, and now Zombie map names have been leaked via a report from CharlieIntel.

Inside this report, they have noted that a name of the Zombies map has been codenamed 'Silver'.

Besides the color codename for the CoD Zombies map, we do not know any more details!
