Spare keys resident evil 2

Spare keys resident evil 2 DEFAULT
resident evil 2 remake spare keys

Just like other games in this franchise, the remake of Resident Evil 2 is full of key items that have little to no explanation. Two of these items are the Spare Keys, which are needed to repair the keypad in the Safety Deposit Room. First referenced in the Storage Locker Terminal Memo, you will be unable to complete this keypad until you earn the Diamond Key.

Both Spare Keys are located in portable safes, which are hidden in two separate areas. Once you get the Portable Safe you’ll need to open them via the mini-game that starts once you examine the item. These Spare Keys will be in the same location for both Claire and Leon on their respective first playthroughs. There is no other place you can find these items and you will have to open the portable safes to get them.

Your first Spare Key/Portable Safe can be found in the Shower Room on the second floor. You won’t need any keys or the valve to remove the steam. Once you walk in the Shower Room, turn to your right and you’ll find the safe on a stack of towels and shirts. Now just examine the safe and complete the puzzle to unlock the first Spare Key.

The second Spare Key/Portable Safe is located in the Linen Room on the second floor. This room is only unlockable after you’ve obtained the Diamond Key. Once you have the Dimond Key, make your way to the second floor and unlock the door to the Linen Room. Inside is the second Portable Safe which will contain the last Spare Key.

Remember, you can put one of the Spare Keys in the keypad even if you don’t own the other. This means you’ll have access to some extra loot early,m which is always helpful in the remake of Resident Evil 2. However, if you want the Hip Pouch you will need both Spare Keys, so we recommend grabbing them as soon as possible.

Resident Evil 2: How to Get the Safety Deposit Room Locker Keys

How to Get the Safety Deposit Room Locker Keys in Resident Evil 2

During the early stages of exploring the Raccoon City Police Department, you’ll come across the Safety Deposit Room. Inside, you’ll find a number of lockers that have some useful items within. Problem is, you’re missing some of the keys for the control panel to open them up. Here’s how to get the safety deposit room locker keys in Resident Evil 2.

Looking at the keypad in the Safety Deposit Room, you’ll notice that keys ‘2’ and ‘3’ are missing. Considering many of the lockers that contain these items require you to have one of these two keys, it’s well worth trying to track them down.

The first of the Safety Deposit Room locker keys can be found in the portable safe in the second-floor Shower Room on the West Wing of the police station. In a 2nd Run playthrough, this can instead be found in the Interrogation Room. You’ll need the Heart Key as Claire or Club Key as Leon to enter.

Use our guide to help you open the portable safe in Resident Evil 2, and you’ll find one of the spare keys inside. This can be placed in the slot for either ‘2’ or ‘3’ on the keypad, so take a quick look at the items available in the various lockers and make your decision this way.

The second of the Safety Deposit Room locker keys in Resident Evil 2 won’t come until a little later on in your adventure around the police station. Once again, you’ll have to crack open one of those portable safes, but this one can be found in the Linen Room.

Problem is, in order to gain access to the Linen Room in Resident Evil 2, you’ll need to get the Diamond Key. This itself can be obtained from the Morgue.

Check the second storage space from the left on the left wall and you’ll find the Diamond Key with a zombie next to it. As soon as you grab the key, the zombie will come to life and a bunch of others will storm into the Morgue to ambush you, so be prepared.

Once you’ve got the Diamond Key, return to the Linen Room, open it up, and you’ll find the portable safe sitting on top of a washing machine within this small room.

A quick recap of those Safety Deposit Room Locker Key locations in Resident Evil 2:

  • Second-floor bathroom on the west wing of the Police Station. Look for the portable safe to the right as you walk into this room.
  • Inside the Linen Room. You’ll need the Diamond Key from the Morgue to open this room, and then the locker key can be found in the portable safe sitting on top of the washing machine in this room, too.

After you’ve grabbed them both, return to the Safety Deposit Room, slot the locker keys into place, and you’ll be free to loot it of all its goodies.

That’s all you need to know on how to get the Safety Deposit Room locker keys in Resident Evil 2. For more tips, tricks, and guides to help you survive the horrors of Raccoon City, be sure to check out our ever-expanding Resident Evil 2 guide wiki.

TLDR;

Question: How do you get the Safety Deposit Room locker keys in Resident Evil 2?

Answer: Both locker keys can be found in portable safes hidden across the station. The first is on the second-floor bathroom on the west wing of the police station. Meanwhile, the second of the spare keys can be found inside the Linen Room, which requires the Diamond Key to unlock. This can be found in the Morgue, which you’ll uncover as part of your adventure.

One key that specific to each character, and that key is here in the Police Station — the Club Key for Leon and the Heart Key for Claire. There are a couple others — the Power Panel Parts — that are in different locations for each character. We’ll call out the character-specific keys in the headings below.

Gas Station Key location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

We’re including this one just for completion’s sake. This key is in the back room of the Gas Station you encounter in the game’s prologue.

You’ll use it to get back into the Gas Station’s main room.

Spade Key location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The first of the playing card-themed keys you’ll find is the Spade Key. It’s on the third floor (3F) on the west side of the Police Station. You’ll go through a hole in the wall next to a very clever human shadow fake out.

You’ll use the Spade Key several times throughout the game — in the Waiting Room to unlock the door to the Art Room and the Main Hall for the doors to the Library and the West Office, for example.

Weapons Locker Key Card location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

You’ll find the Weapons Locker Key Card in the Art Room on the east side of the second floor (2F) of the Police Station. You’ll need the Spade Key to get here and you’ll probably visit the room while trying to retrieve the Red Jewel (above).

The Weapons Locker Key Card unlocks the locker at the back of the Safety Deposit Room on the west side of the first floor (1F). Leon picks up the Shotgun here and Claire gets her Grenade Launcher.

    Police Station Key Item locations

The Police Station is the highest concentration of locked doors and lockers that you’ll find in Resident Evil 2, so it fits that there are a ton of Key Items here, too.

Spare Key 1 location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The first Spare Key you find is in the second floor Locker Room (2F) on the west side of the Police Station. It’s in a Portable Safe. Portable Safes have eight buttons, each associated with one of the lights above. Your job is to press buttons to light up the lights in order counterclockwise. It doesn’t matter where you start, you just have to keep lighting the lights in order.

The Spare Key fits on the Lockers Terminal in the Safety Deposit Room on the first floor (1F). We recommend placing the first one in the 2 position.

    Capcom via Polygon

Red Book, Scepter, and Red Jewel location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

You’ll find the Red Book in the Library right next to the Spade Key door back to the Main Hall. After you unlock the Spade Key door in the Waiting Room and get to the Art Room, the Red Book gets combined with the Statue’s Left Arm and placed on the statue to get the Scepter.

Examining the Scepter lets you remove the Red Jewel. The Jewel fits onto the Bejeweled Box (below).

Bolt Cutter location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The Bolt Cutter is at the bottom of the Fire Escape on the far east side of the Police Station’s second floor (2F) near the helicopter crash. You’ll find them in a wheelbarrow at the base of the stairs.

The Bolt Cutter is necessary to get through any doors that are chained closed — like the door right next to where you pick it up, the door to the East Office, and the door in the Operations Room.

Main Hall Fuse location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

During your first run, this Electrical Part is on one of the desks in the East Office. When you examine it, you’ll identify it as the Main Hall Fuse.

The panel it goes into is next to the shutter that you first crawled under to investigate the east hallway. Place it in the panel to open the shutter to the Main Hall.

Valve Handle location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The Valve Handle is on the desk in the office-within-an-office inside the East Office (1F).

Take it to the Locker Room on the second floor’s (2F) west side to turn off the steam pipe blocking access to the Shower Room — this ultimately gets you to the STARS Office.

Electronic Gadget, Battery, and Detonator location — Claire and Leon

    • Capcom via Polygon
    • Capcom via Polygon
    • Capcom via Polygon

When you use the Bolt Cutter (above) to open the door in the Operations Room on the first floor (1F) of the Police Station’s west side, you’ll find a small, unnamed room. The Electronic Gadget is on the desk there. When you combine it with the Battery from the office-within-an-office in the STARS Office on the west side of the second floor (2F), you’ll end up with a Detonator.

You’ll need the Detonator to blow the C4 inside the East Storage Room and open the cell and find the Maiden Medallion.

    Parking Garage Key locations

The Parking Garage overlaps with the Police Station quite a bit, but your goal is different when you return. This will also be your chance to unlock the rest of the doors in the Police Station.

Diamond Key location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The Diamond Key is in the Morgue in the southeast corner of the basement (B1). It’s in the second drawer from the left on the left side of the room.

You’ll have to fight a zombie for it, and then you can use it to open the office in the Firing Range (B1) and the Linen Room (2F).

Heart Key location — Claire only

    Capcom via Polygon

When Claire makes it to the Chief’s Office, she’ll be able to get to the Private Collection Room (2F). There, she’ll find the Lover’s Relief and retrieve the Heart Key from it.

The Heart Key opens the door out of the Chief’s Office, the Interrogation Room (1F), and a door in the East Storage Room (3F).

Club Key location — Leon only

    Capcom via Polygon

Leon can find the Club Key in the Boiler Room (1F). He’ll visit this room while he’s out on the Balcony (3F) and Roof (2F) while putting out the helicopter fire. This room is boarded up and inaccessible in Claire’s campaign.

The Club Key opens the Observation Room (1F) and the Records Room (2F).

Parking Garage Key Card location — Claire and Leon

    • Capcom via Polygon
    • Capcom via Polygon

After finding both Power Panel Parts, Claire and Leon each have to place them in different Power Panels — Leon’s in the Jail (B1) and Claire’s in the Chief’s Office (2F).

Solving the puzzle on those Power Panels will get you the Parking Garage Key Card.

You’ll only need to use the Key Card to open the gate in the Parking Garage.

    Parking Garage Key Item locations

The Key Items in the Parking Garage section are mostly used to unlock new areas and new weapons. And there’s the two Power Panel Parts that you need to collect to leave the Parking Garage.

Square Crank location — Leon only

    Capcom via Polygon

The Square Crank is on the table next to the Jail (B1) cell where you meet the reporter with the Parking Garage Key Card.

You’ll need the Square Crank to open the shutter between the Art Room and the Chief’s Office on the second floor of the Police Station (2F) and the shutter between the Morgue and the Generator Room.

Car Key location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

Both Claire and Leon will find the Car Key in a Tin Storage Box in the Firing Range (B1).

Take the Car Key back out to the Parking Garage to open the trunk of one of the cruisers. Leon will get the Gun Stock (Matilda) for his handgun and Claire will get the JMB Hp3 handgun.

Power Panel Part 1 location — Leon only

    Capcom via Polygon

Leon will pick up his first Power Panel Part in the Generator Room (B1). You’ll need to use the Crank Handle (above)to get back there. The Part is in a Boxed Electronic Part box on a cart right when you walk in.

This Part goes in the panel next to the Jail cell.

Break Room Hallway Fuse location Leon only

    Capcom via Polygon

Leon will pick up the Break Room Hallway Fuse in the Break Room (2F) once he gets back into the Police Station from the Parking Garage.

The Fuse will open the shutter that cut Officer Elliot in half in the Watchman’s Room (1F).

Bejeweled Box and STARS Badge/USB Dongle Key location — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

Leon can enter the Observation Room (1F) with the Club Key, and Claire’s Heart Key gets her into the Interrogation Room. You can cross between these rooms, though, so we’re lumping them together. Both characters will find the Bejeweled Box in the Observation Room.

Combine it with the Red Jewel (above) to find the STARS Badge.

    Capcom via Polygon

If you examine the STARS Badge, you can turn it into a USB Dongle Key. Take that to the STARS Office (2F) to unlock the Armory. Here, Leon will get the Lightning Hawk and Claire will pick up the MQ 11 Submachine Gun.

    Capcom via Polygon

Turn the USB Dongle Key back into the Badge by examining it again, then take it to the Special Weapons Locker in the Underground Stairs (B1). Use the Badge to unlock it, and Leon will get the Long Barrel (Lightning Hawk) and Claire will pick up the Suppressor (MQ 11).

Spare Key 2 — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The second Spare Key is in the Linen Room (2F) just south of the STARS Office. It’s inside another Portable Safe.

Take this Spare Key down to the Safety Deposit Room (1F)’s Lockers Terminal and put it in the 3 position to open the rest of the lockers. (Importantly, 203 will get you a Hip Pouch.)

Mechanic Jack Handle — Claire and Leon

    Capcom via Polygon

The Mechanic Jack Handle is in the Record’s Room (1F) in the southeast of the Police Station. Leon gets in through a Club Key door in the hallway, while Claire will get here through a Heart Key door in the Operations Room.

The Mechanic Jack Handle is required to move the jack in the Library (2F).

Power Panel Part 1 — Claire only

How to Open a Portable Safe - Resident Evil 2 Remake

A little way into your ordeal with Resident Evil 2, you’ll come across the Safety Deposit Room. The lockers in this room contain an assortment of life-saving supplies, but you need a few things before you can unlock them. Namely, you need some spare keys for the keypad.

Check the control panel and you’ll see that the number two and three keys are missing from the keypad, which means you won’t be able to open any lockers containing those numbers just yet. It just so happens that includes most of them. However, you can still open lockers 106 and 109. There’s a roll of film in one, which is useful for another puzzle — but one thing at a time.

Head out of the Safety Deposit Room and move up the staircase onto the second floor. Go west and enter the door on your right, into the Shower Room. Grab the Portable Safe from on top of the box in the corner of the room.Resident Evil 2 Spare Keys

How to open the Portable Safe

A note nearby gives some clues as to how to open the Portable Safe, but you still need to engage your noodle if you want to crack it open. There are eight buttons on the safe, each of which corresponds to a light. The lights form a circle and each light in the circle must be activated sequentially. It doesn’t matter where you start; you just have to complete the circle. Unfortunately, I can’t just give you the code as it changes between playthroughs.

The easiest way to solve the puzzle is to assign each button a number from one to eight. With that done, all you have to do now is press each button and see which light it corresponds to. If it helps you to remember, grab a notepad and draw a circle of your own, then write down the number of the button in the position of the light that it illuminates. Once you’ve figured out the order, just enter the code and unlock the safe.

    Resident Evil 2 Spare Keys

With the safe cracked, you’ll be rewarded with a Spare Key for the keypad in the Safety Deposit Room. You can head back there now to open some of the lockers… or hang on until you have both keys. If you do go back, I recommend replacing the number two key first. This allows you to open more boxes than the number three key.

    Resident Evil 2 Spare Keys

    Finding the second Portable Safe

Put all this keypad business out of your mind, for now, and continue through the Police Station. Just follow the events of the story until you reach the Parking Garage. When you first get here, a cutscene involving another character will play. Although which mysterious stranger turns up changes depending on whether you’re playing as Leon or Claire.

Once the cutscene is over, head out through the eastern exit and make your way through the Kennels, towards the Morgue. You’ll face either Lickers or Zombie Dogs along the way, so be ready for a fight. Once you reach the Morgue, open the storage drawers to find some supplies, a few scares, and most importantly, the Diamond Key.Resident Evil 2 Spare Keys

It’s backtracking time now, folks! You need to use the Diamond Key to gain access to the Linen Room, all the way back on the western side of the Police Station — up on the second floor near the S.T.A.R.S. Office. Inside here you’ll find the second Portable Safe. Unlock this using the same method as the first. Your reward will be the same prize — another Spare Key for the keypad in the Safety Deposit Room.

    Resident Evil 2 Spare Keys

Take the key back to the Safety Deposit Room and combine it with the keypad. Again. You can now open the other two lockers: 103 and 203! They contain a Combat Knife and a Hip Pouch that increases your carrying capacity.

Congratulations, you’ve solved the Safety Deposit Room Keypad puzzle in Resident Evil 2! The rewards might seem a bit paltry, but you’ll be thankful for that extra inventory space in the long run.

Resident Evil 2 Remake Wiki Guide

This page contains the Spare Key 2 Location in Resident Evil 2 Remake for both the Main Story run for Claire and Leon and the Second Story run, where some locations are different. The Spare Key 2 is used to open Safety Deposit Room lockers. With both this and Spare Key 1, you can open all lockers.

In the Linen Closet, accessible after you get the Diamond Key from the Morgue, is a Portable Safe. Play the (randomized) safe minigame to unlock it and get the Spare Key for the Safety Deposit Room control panel. Use this Spare Key to complete the panel in the Safety Deposit Room. On this control panel you can enter several codes, but you'll need the Spare Key 1 and Spare Key 2 to enter them all since the #2 and #3 button are missing. Since it’s a blank key, you can use it for either missing piece, which means installing it will either get you:

    • Leon: Shotgun Shells and Gunpowder (2 key), or a Combat Knife (3 key).
    • Claire:
