When you create a chart in Excel, it uses the information in the cell above each column or row of data as the legend name. You can change legend names by updating the information in those cells, or you can update the default legend name by using Select Data.
Note: If you create a chart without using row or column headers, Excel uses default names, starting with “Series 1.” You can learn more about how to create a chart to ensure your rows and columns are formatted properly.

Show the legend in your chart
Select the chart, click the plus sign in the upper-right corner of the chart, and then select the Legend check box.
Optional. Click the black arrow to the right of Legend for options on where to place the legend in your chart.
Change the legend name in the excel data
Select the cell in the workbook that contains the legend name you want to change.
Tip: You can first click your chart to see what cells within your data are included in your legend.
Type the new legend name in the selected cell, and press Enter. The legend name in the chart updates to the new legend name in your data.
Certain charts, such as Clustered Columns, also use the cells to the left of each row as legend names. You can edit legend names the same way.
Change the legend name using select data
Select your chart in Excel, and click Design > Select Data.
Click on the legend name you want to change in the Select Data Source dialog box, and click Edit.
Note: You can update Legend Entries and Axis Label names from this view, and multiple Edit options might be available.
Type a legend name into the Series name text box, and click OK. The legend name in the chart changes to the new legend name.
Note: This modifies your only chart legend names, not your cell data. Alternatively, you can select a different cell in your data to use as the legend name. Click inside the Series name text box, and select the cell within your data.
Add or remove titles in a chart
The names of data series in apps for Office are typically linked to the worksheet data that's used for the chart, and changes you make to that data are automatically shown in the chart. If you want to rename an existing data series or change the values without changing the data on the worksheet, do the following:
Right-click the chart with the data series you want to rename, and click Select Data.
In the Select Data Source dialog box, under Legend Entries (Series), select the data series, and click Edit.
In the Series name box, type the name you want to use.
The name you type appears in the chart legend, but won't be added to the worksheet.
To change the data range for the data series, in the Series values box, type a data range for the data series or enter the values you want.
The values you type will appear in the chart, but won't be added to the worksheet.
Note: An xy (scatter) has a Series X values and Series Y values box, and a bubble chart has a Series X values, Series Y values, and Series bubble sizes box. You can change the data range for each of those values.

To update your Microsoft Excel worksheet, you can add a data series to the source data and also update the worksheet chart to make your data meaningful to your colleagues and clients. Applying an Insert command will add more cells to enter your categories and values. As an alternative, applying the Chart Filters and the Select Data Source options will enable you to rearrange, hide or remove a data series from the chart.
Add Data Series to a Worksheet
Enter the new data series in the cells next to or below the source data. If there are no empty cells, insert a new row by right-clicking the row below where you want to insert the new row. Point over “Insert,” select “Entire row” and then click “OK.” To insert a new column, right-click the cell to the right where you want to insert the new column, point over “Insert” and then click “Entire column” followed by “OK.”
Click inside the chart to display the worksheet data with colored sizing frames.
Click and drag the sizing handle to include the new data series and update your chart. Save this worksheet.
Click inside your chart to bring up the three chart commands to the side, including Chart Filters. Mouse over the icons to display the commands.
Select “Chart Filters,” and then choose “Select Data” to open the Select Data Source dialog box.
Select the series in the Legend Entries (Series) box, and then click “Edit” to open the Edit Series box.
Update the Series Name field or the Series Values field. To reposition the data series, click the “Move Up” or “Move Down” arrow buttons. Click “OK.”
Click “OK” to close the Select Data Source box. Save this worksheet.
- To hide a chart’s data series, click the “Chart Filters” button and then deselect the check boxes in the Series or Categories section on the Values tab. Click “Apply.” Save this worksheet.
- To remove a chart’s data series, click “Chart Filters” and then click “Select Data.” Select the series in the Legend Entries (Series) box, and then select “Remove.” Click “OK” to update the chart. Save this worksheet.

A data series in Microsoft Excel is a set of data, shown in a row or a column, which is presented using a graph or chart. To help analyze your data, you might prefer to rename your data series.
Rather than renaming the individual column or row labels, you can rename a data series in Excel by editing the graph or chart. You might want to do this if your data labels are opaque and difficult to immediately understand.
You can rename any data series presented in a chart or graph, including a basic Excel bar chart.

To demonstrate, we have a basic bar chart showing a list of fruit sales on a quarterly basis. The chart shows four bars for each product, with the bars labeled at the bottom—these are your data series.
In this example, the data series are labeled alphabetically from A to D.
Labels such as these wouldn’t be hugely helpful for this example purpose, as you wouldn’t be able to determine the periods of time.
This is where you’d look to rename the data series. To do this, right-click your graph or chart and click the “Select Data” option.
This will open the “Select Data Source” options window. Your multiple data series will be listed under the “Legend Entries (Series)” column.
To begin renaming your data series, select one from the list and then click the “Edit” button.
In the “Edit Series” box, you can begin to rename your data series labels. By default, Excel will use the column or row label, using the cell reference to determine this.
Replace the cell reference with a static name of your choice. For this example, our data series labels will reflect yearly quarters (Q1 2019, Q2 2019, etc).
You could also replace this with another cell reference if you prefer to use labels that are separate from your data. This will ensure that your chart updates automatically if you decide to change the labels shown in those cells at a later date.
Once you’ve renamed your data series label, click “OK” to confirm.
This will take you back to the “Select Data Source” window, where you can repeat the steps for each data series label.
If you want to restore your labels to the same as your column or row labels, repeat the steps above, replacing the static labels with the cell reference for each column or row label.
You will need to name the worksheet containing the label when you do this. For instance, using here would show the label in cell B1.
For this example, this would show the letter A.
This will mean that any changes to your column or row labels will also update the data series labels in your chart or graph.
Once you’ve renamed all of the data labels, click “OK” to save the changes.
Your graph or chart will show your updated data series labels.
These are shown at the bottom of your chart, and are color-coded to match your data.
You can make further changes to the formatting of your graph or chart at this point. For instance, you could add a trendline to your Microsoft Excel chart to help you see further patterns in your data.

Series excel rename
This looks a lot like the data being discussed in another of your threads. As I understand it, much of that discussion is how to rearrange the data in the spreadsheet. A final answer to this question will probably need to wait until you resolve the other thread and get the data in its final layout.
In many ways, though, I still think the answer is the same -- have a cell in the spreadsheet that will contain the series name, then link to that cell in the series definition. As your data is laid out here, Excel cannot automatically recognize which cell would contain the series name (some of the discussion in the other thread will result in a layout where Excel can automatically recognize the series name). In this layout, I would be tempted to put a formula like =YEAR(B3) in B1, then copy that to N1, Z1 and so on. You can then link to these cells in the series definition, and the series titles will automatically update whenever the result of these formulas changes.
When you figure out how best to arrange the data, then I would suggest a similar strategy -- put a formula in the cells that contain the series names.
How to rename data series in Excel chart
To create a chart in Excel, we need to create a data table and then, the chart will display data based on the content and data in the table. If the data table has only a few columns, you can change the name for each column or row. However, we can do it faster by editing it in the chart. Instructions for renaming data series in Excel
For example, we have the data sheet and the chart from the data table as below. We will rename the data series A, B, C and D in the chart.
We right click on the chart and select Select Data .
Display the new interface for us to select the data source. You click on the name A and click Edit to proceed to edit.
Now you need to enter a new name for the data column in Series name and then click OK below to rename this data column.
Back in the Select data table, we will see the name of a column of data that has been changed. You continue with the remaining data columns. After renaming the column, click OK below to save the new changes.
The result of the data series in the chart has been changed to another name for easier viewing of the chart.

In general, the data series will be named automatically when you creating a chart in Excel. In some cases, you may need to rename the data series as below screenshot shown, how could you handle it? This article will show you the solution in detail.
