WiseRail® Cable Railing Kits

WiseRail®WiseCable® Legacy WC-LS

Cable Railing on Level Straight Runs
DeckWise® WiseRail® Legacy fittings

Use the WiseCable® Legacy WC-LS Series for any type of wood post as an inside to inside fitting on a straight run. The tensioning device is an adjustable body with hanger bolt which is a factory swaged, tensioning, face-of-the-post-mounted fitting. A push lock with threaded eye attaches the same way to the other end.

The lag thread of the hanger bolt portion of the fitting is driven into a pre-drilled hole in the wood end post. The cable is retained within the body portion of the fitting by a ferrule swaged onto the end of the cable. The lock nut is installed all the way onto the hanger bolt first, followed by the body, which is secured onto the hanger bolt, creating tension on the cable. Once sufficient tension is achieved, the lock nut is secured against the end of the body to prevent the fitting from loosening.

Tools needed for WiseCable® Legacy WC-LS Series on level straight runs:

  • 5/32 drill bit if 1/8” cable, 7/32 if 3/16”
  • 9/32 drill bit for lag eye installation
  • 7/16 wrench for tensioning adjustable body
  • 5/32 hex wrench to tighten mounting screws
  • Cable cutting tool
  • If using post protector tubes, 1/4 drill bit

Cable Railing on a Pitch or Stairs

Top posts are often corner posts, which may require the stair run to connect to the face of the post. The top and bottom of the cable run would be connected perpendicular to those posts, and only the intermediate posts would be drilled on the angle for the cable to run through.

Use the WiseCable® Legacy WC-LSS Series for any type of wood post as an inside to inside fitting on a pitch or stair application. The tensioning device is an Adjustable body with Threaded Eye, which attaches via a mounting screw to the lag eye, threaded tab. A push lock with threaded eye attaches the same way to the other end.

Tools needed for WiseCable® Legacy WC-LSS Series on a pitch or stairs:

  • 5/32 drill bit if 1/8” cable, 7/32 if 3/16”
  • 7/32 drill bit for lag eye installation
  • 7/16 wrench for tensioning adjustable body
  • 5/32 hex wrench to tighten mounting screws
  • Cable cutting tool
  • If using post protector tubes, 1/4 drill bit

The WiseCable® Legacy WC-LSS Series can be used to go up a stair and across a landing by inserting post protector tubes (order separately) in the break-over post. The tube will prevent the cable from carving a groove into your post where it exits at an angle. For post protector tubes, see Cable Railing Accessories page.

WiseRail®WiseCable® Estate WC-ES

Cable Railing on Level Straight Runs
DeckWise® WiseRail® state WC-ES fittings

Use the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series for any type of wood post as an outside to outside fitting on a straight level run or on a pitch or stairs. The tensioning device is a 3½” long invisible receiver, which installs through the wood post on one end. The invisible receiver with invisible stud combination is a concealed, swaged, tensioning, through-the-post-mounted fitting that is suitable for level or pitched runs, and is available for wood applications. A pull lock fitting is installed through the other end.

Use the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series for decks with dedicated end posts for each run where the posts are situated such that, the back sides of the posts are all accessible. Meaning you can use a through-the-post configuration. This fitting is placed and concealed within a pre-drilled hole in the wood end post (a minimum of 3” of clearance must exist on the back side of the post to allow installation of the receiver). The stud is swaged onto one end of the cable and is inserted and threaded into the receiver installed in the end post. Tension is created by rotating the receiver (with a hex wrench inserted into its broached end) and drawing the stud into the receiver.

Tools needed for WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series on level straight runs:

  • 5/32 drill bit if 1/8” cable, 7/32 if 3/16”
  • 29/64 drill bit for receiver and pull lock installation
  • 3/16 wrench for tensioning receiver
  • Cable cutting tool
  • If using post protector tubes, 1/4 drill bit
  Installation Guide  Installation Accessories

When taking the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series cable railing through a corner, do not bend the cable past 45⁰ at any one time. If turning 90⁰, a 2-step turn using a double corner post configuration is required as illustrated in the corner post instructions (view here).

DeckWise® WiseRail® Estate wood

To keep the cable from biting in the wood, a post protector tube must be inserted into the wood post where the cable enters/exits at an angle. See Cable Railing on a Pitch or Stairs below.

WiseRail®WiseCable® Estate WC-ES

Cable Railing on a Pitch or Stairs

The cleanest approach to running cable on a pitch is to drill through both end both posts on the square (NOT at the angle of the stairs). Use the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series for any type of wood post as an outside to outside fitting on any pitch or stair run. No beveled washers necessary. Only intermediate posts need to be drilled on the angle of the stairs.

For wood posts on a pitch or stairs, install the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series the same as on straight runs. The tensioning device is a 3½” long Invisible receiver, which installs through the wood post on one end. A pull lock fitting is installed through the other end with a post protector tube, ordered separately. The WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series can be used to go up a stair and across a landing by inserting post protector tubes in the break-over post. The tube will prevent the cable from carving a groove into your post where it exits at an angle.

Tools needed for WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series on a pitch or stairs:

  • 5/32 drill bit if 1/8” cable, 7/32 if 3/16”
  • 29/64 drill bit for receiver and pull lock installation
  • 3/16 wrench for tensioning receiver

WiseRail®WiseCable® Heritage WC-HS

Cable Railing on Level Straight Runs
DeckWise® WiseRail® state WC-HS

The WiseCable® Heritage WC-HS Series is a budget-friendly cable railing kit for any type of wood post as an outside to outside fitting on a straight level run or on a pitch or stairs. The tensioning device is a /8” long threaded stud which installs on the back side of one end post. A pull lock fitting is installed through the other end.

This through-the-post configuration is the only scenario in which the economical threaded stud kits may be used. These threaded stud kits are more economical than the WiseCable® Estate WC-ES Series, but the threaded studs are a basic, functional fitting, not a hide-in-the-post solution. A brass hex nut and some metal thread will extend beyond the back of the post on one end. (Brass hex nut end cap sold separately.)

Use the WiseCable® Heritage WC-HS Series for decks with dedicated end posts for each run where the posts are situated such that, the back sides of the posts are all accessible. Meaning you can use a through-the-post configuration. This is both the most economical solution and where the fittings are least visible.

When taking the WiseCable® Heritage WC-HS Series cable railing through a corner, do not bend the cable past 45⁰ at any one time. If turning 90⁰, a 2-step turn using a double corner post configuration is required as illustrated in the corner post instructions (view here).

Tools needed for WiseCable® Heritage WC-HS Series on level straight runs:

  • 5/32 drill bit
  • 9/32 drill bit for threaded stud installation
  • 29/64 drill bit for pull lock installation
  • 7/32 wrench for holding the stud
  • 7/16 wrench for tightening jam nuts
  • Cable cutting tool

If you have trouble inserting the cable into a push or pull fitting, it may be because the locking wedges have become stuck. This is not a defect! For push lock fittings for 1/8” cable, using either a PL-KEY or 1/4" diameter bolt, insert the PL-KEY or bolt into the fitting hole and press until the wedges move freely. Using anything larger than what is recommended to free the wedges could actually get stuck inside the fitting – NOT what you want to happen!
