Installing new windows is a home project you want done right. If you're ready to invest in replacement or new-construction windows, consider the leading window manufacturer: Andersen.

Headquartered in Bayport, Minnesota, Andersen Corporation was founded over 115 years ago as a small lumber business and has evolved into a billion-dollar window and door company, with manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe and retail locations all over the world. Andersen offers a variety of products through its Andersen Windows and Renewal by Andersen brands, and has expanded into luxury windows and doors by acquiring the Weiland, MQ, and Heritage brands within the last decade. Andersen offers windows and doors for DIY, new construction, replacement, and commercial purposes. Its products are sold and installed by certified local contractors and retailers like The Home Depot.

Andersen values advancements in architecture, sustainable products, and customer service experience and is recognized for its efforts year after year. In recent months, Andersen Corporation earned a 2021 Energy Star Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award and continued its partnership with the American Institute of Architects. Customers named Renewal by Andersen the "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Window and Patio Door Retailers and Manufacturers," according to J.D. Power's 2020 Satisfaction Study.

Where to Buy Andersen Windows

There are two installation options: You can either get your windows professionally installed by an Andersen-certified dealer or buy Andersen replacement windows online or in-store from The Home Depot. Because proper window installation is crucial, it's important to carefully consider your options.

Professional installation by certified contractors is a great choice for those who have large window projects or who simply don't have the skillset or time. Although it's more expensive than self-installation, hiring an Andersen contractor gives you the benefits of Andersen's two-year limited installation warranty. Plus, certified contractors undergo a stringent vetting process and are trained with Andersen-specific installation techniques, according to Shawn Ahern, Senior Marketing Manager at Andersen Corporation. "There is no project too big or small to request a quote or schedule an appointment with a certified Andersen Dealer," Ahern says. Find an Andersen-certified installer here or call 888-305-2384

If you're an experienced DIYer, consider purchasing Andersen replacement windows from The Home Depot. You can choose from a wide range of window styles, including casement, picture, sliding, awning, and double- and single-hung designs.

Renewal by Andersen Windows

Andersen's full-service window and door replacement division, Renewal by Andersen, provides a streamlined process with award-winning service. Customers work with professional design consultants, project technicians, and window installers from the design phase through the final installation. A customer care team assists with any needed warranty service to make sure windows function correctly. Plus, customers have a single point of contact for every step of the process, making communication simple.

Renewal by Andersen has sold, built, and installed more than 6 million windows since its founding in 1995, according to Jeanne Junker, senior VP of affiliate operations at Renewal by Andersen LLC. Junker says the company's best-selling type of window is the double-hung style because of its timeless, simple, and versatile qualities. "Renewal by Andersen's double-hung windows open smoothly, allow for quick one-handed tilting of both sashes for easy cleaning, and are exceptionally easy to operate," she says. Sash options include equal, cottage style, and oriel.

Andersen Window Types

As the leading window manufacturer, Andersen offers a wide selection of styles—including awning, bay, bow, casement, double- and single-hung, sliding, pass-through, picture, and specialty windows. Not sure what type of window you want or need replaced? Here are brief explanations of the windows sold by Andersen and Renewal by Andersen.

  • Awning windows feature a top-hinged sash that swings outward from the bottom when opened.
  • Bay and bow windows have a combination of three or more window panels that extend out from the house.
  • Casement windows are hinged on the side and open outward to the left or right with a crank handle.
  • Double-hung windows have operable lower and upper sashes that raise and lower for ventilation.
  • Single-hung windows have an operable lower sash and a stationary upper sash.
  • Sliding windows, also called gliding windows, open horizontally from side to side.
  • Pass-through windows either fold or slide open to connect indoor and outdoor spaces for entertaining and convenience.
  • Picture windows let natural light into homes but do not open.
  • Speciality windows come in a variety of shapes, like hexagon and oval, as well as elegant arches, including ellipse- and cathedral-style windows.

Renewal by Andersen's window and door visualizer lets you create your dream windows before installation. Just upload a picture of your home's exterior or choose from the sample photo gallery and then select a size, interior and exterior colors, hardware finishes, grille patterns, glass, and trim. When your customization is complete, request a free consultation from your local Renewal by Andersen dealer. Interested in Renewal by Andersen patio doors? You can talk to your design specialist about both types of projects during your appointment.

Andersen Window Materials

Renewal by Andersen offers custom-built windows made of Fibrex composite material, while Andersen Windows has both wood and Fibrex standard and custom-built windows. Exterior options include vinyl, Fibrex, aluminum, and fiberglass.

Andersen says its Fibrex material provides two times the strength and durability of vinyl. It's made of 40% wood fiber and 60% thermoplastic polymer, which can be molded into a variety of frame styles and painted any color during the design process. The best part? Fibrex windows could lower your energy bills, plus they withstand decay, never need repainting, and won't blister, fade, flake, or peel like some vinyl windows. Along with all of the Renewal by Andersen windows, Fibrex is used for Andersen Windows' 100 Series products and some A-Series windows.

All-wood windows are visually appealing, but they're not always the most durable option. To prevent air and water infiltration, Andersen clads the exterior of their wood windows with a low-maintenance layer of aluminum, vinyl, or fiberglass. Andersen's E-Series, A-Series, 400-Series, and 200-Series feature clad wood windows.

Andersen Windows Energy Efficiency

One of the most important factors to consider when purchasing windows is energy efficiency. Energy Star-certified windows help create comfortable indoor temperatures, prevent UV damage to furniture and flooring, lower your energy bills, and reduce your home's carbon footprint.

Andersen began partnering with Energy Star in 1998. Between Energy Star-certified glass options and reclaimed wood frames (Fibrex material), Andersen's windows and doors are good for your home and the environment. Live in a cold climate? Windows constructed with triple-pane glass or Andersen's SmartSun glass prevent heat from escaping while PassiveSun glass helps your home gain solar heat. SmartSun glass blocks 95% of harsh UV rays that not only heat up the room but can damage drapes, artwork, and furniture, according to Jeanne Junker, Senior VP of Affiliate Operations at Renewal by Andersen LLC. Andersen also offers a HeatLock coating for certain glass types that helps reflect heat back into your home.

Experience warm weather all year long? SmartSun Glass helps block UV rays and heat from the sun, and Sun Glass offers tinted protection against intense sunlight. For seasonal climates, Low-E4 glass helps with both heating and cooling costs, and you can add a HeatLock coating for extra solar heating in the winter.

2021 Update: While this Renewal by Andersen window review was originally written several years ago it’s been updated in 2021 as we continue to work to provide the best replacement window information on the entire internet in 2021 and beyond.  See info towards the bottom of this post for the most recommended window companies in 2021.  Be sure to post a comment or send us a message with any questions!

If you’re looking for Renewal by Andersen windows reviews you came to the right place.  If you’re in the business of selling Renewal by Andersen windows you’re probably not going to be thrilled with what you read here.

We’re not big fans of these windows for several reasons.  Before we start off down that road we should tell you that there is no debating the fact that these windows are pretty.  They really do look nice and that’s their main selling point.  If you’re in the market for new windows and you want something with a warmer feel than traditional vinyl windows you may be interested in Renewal.  That wouldn’t be unusual.

Why don’t we like Renewal by Andersen windows?

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after a career in sales it’s that a salesperson who spends all of his energy disparaging a competing product must not have a very strong value proposition to offer.  The Renewal by Andersen or RBA sales pitch very often relies on emphasizing why you should not by vinyl windows.

They often use a handout that talks about vinyl windows warping and bowing and cracking and falling apart.  This is complete nonsense, it’s based on untrue information and it is designed to trick you into thinking all vinyl windows will fall apart in 5 years.

Why would a salesperson distribute untrue information?

Because the truth doesn’t help their sales pitch.

The next untruth often spread by the Renewal salespeople is that “lifetime” warranties are actually only good for 7 years.  I don’t know where they got this idea, but it’s just factually not true.

Why would someone tell you a “lifetime” warranty was actually limited?

Because their warranty is short and they need a way to explain it.

In fact, most nicer vinyl windows come with lifetime warranties that cover the windows for as long as you own the home.  That will often be MUCH longer than 7 years.  Again, the Renewal by Andersen salespeople are faced with a dilemma.  Their warranty is relatively short compared to less expensive vinyl windows.  They could be honest with you and explain the differences and we’re sure some of them are, but we hear stories every day about these false claims and it bugs us.

What is the warranty for Renewal by Andersen windows?

UPDATE: As of the summer of 2016 the Renewal by Andersen warranty has changed.  Perhaps they listened to our feedback.  They now offer a 20 year warranty on the fibrex frames which is much better than the 10 year warranty they had offered in the past.  We’re glad they extended this.  It was a smart move for them and a better value for their customers.

We hear their salespeople continuing to tell people that vinyl windows with lifetime warranties are actually only covered for 7 years.  I believe this is completely untrue.  I’ve asked them several times for any references to verify this claim and I’ve never received anything in return.  If we get something we’ll post it and if not we’ll continue to believe this claim is completely untrue.

Remember, if they had a good value they wouldn’t feel the need to make claims that are not based in fact.

So what about those Fibrex frames?

We know they’ll tell you all about how great those Fibrex frames are.  They’re not wood, they’re not fiberglass they’re a composite that will never cause you any problems.  Forget about this.  if they were never going to cause you any problems they would have a longer warranty.

For example, you can now get real wood windows from Jeld-Wen with a lifetime warranty on the frames that covered rot or termites or any damage.  That’s pretty strong, the warranty on the Renewal windows is better than it was, but in line with what other companies offer.

Are we just disparaging Renewal by Andersen windows to sell vinyl?

Nope, I have Andersen wood windows in my house and our company installs wood and clad window options every day.  We’re a fan of the beauty and warmth that wood windows provide, but we’re completely turned off by the sales tactics that come along with this composite product.

In addition, you can get BETTER warranties on real wood windows than you get with Renewal by Andersen.  Why would you get imitation wood (Fibrex) with a 20 year warranty when you can get real wood with a 20 year warranty for about the same price?  You probably wouldn’t which is why we’re pretty convinced that the Fibrex product doesn’t represent a very good value.

What about the cost of Renewal by Andersen windows?

They cost a lot.  The pricing depends on the local dealer.  They are sold and installed by independent companies, not by Andersen itself so the prices will vary.  We typically see them being offered in the range of $1000 per window or more including installation, but you may be able to find them less than that.  Remember, for that kind of money you have a lot of options.

So what’s the bottom line?

Renewal by Andersen typically doesn’t represent a very good value.  If you like the look of a real wood window we highly suggest getting a real wood window.  Fiberglass and composite products do look nice, but their drawbacks outweigh the benefits in our opinion.  Some folks are afraid of wood windows because their old wood windows have caused them problems, but this doesn’t need to be a concern with the nicer wood window options available today.  Bottom line: keep looking.

After your consultation, you can schedule your installation day. Renewal by Andersen has a video on the website to help you get ready and learn what to expect from your service.

If you aren’t ready for a consultation, you can request a brochure to be sent to your home so you can explore window options on your own.

“Don’t spend any more time looking for a window installer/supplier. Dimitar and his team did a fantastic job replacing 25 single pane windows and doors in my 1930s home in Oakland with beautiful double pane windows. They were professional, worked efficiently, kept my home clean, and kept their word on every detail. They were competitive in cost and I am thrilled with the final result. I can’t recommend these guys enough!”

“Ran into a salesman working my neighborhood,he said he knows nothing about a finance charge! He also said he was going to get in touch with someone and get back to me which is never did!! They only want to talk to you if you’re BUYING something. Oh!! And our salesman’s phone # is just a dialup tone every time when I try to call.

I bought Renewal by Andersen in the past and they’ve been very good. This time, I purchased hung windows and the slider. They gave me a window replacement timeline of one day and they did it. The installation was great and it was really very quick.

I saw a TV commercial where Renewal by Andersen was offering discounts. That prompted me to call because at the time, my wife and I were in the market to get a new door. We purchased a front door and a sliding glass patio door. The salesperson was excellent. We were convinced to do Renewal by Andersen because he was very straightforward and offered tons of options. The professionalism showed by the salesperson was unmatched by the competition. The timeline was reasonable and expected and industry standard. We understood that they don't carry those in inventory necessarily.

When they give you the quote, they assume it's a custom job. After the sale, the project manager came in to see if they could make it fit a standard door. He did the detailed measurements of the door. We were able to save some money because he was able to confirm that the door could fit into a standard setting. It didn't have to be customized. They explained that they do it that way so as not to shock the customer. The hand-off from the project manager to the team wasn't perfect, but the gentleman who was kind of the lead on the install team was excellent. It rained really bad that day but they were completely prepared.

The installation was subcontracted out but I was very impressed with the team. The were stellar. They knew what they needed to get done. The only negative was the scheduling of the job. They called and told us the installation would happen on a Thursday. We said, "No. We were told we'd be able to pick a date." We worked it out and the flexibility to do it on Saturday was key for us because we wouldn't have been able to work in the house if we did it during the week.

The other advantage to that crew was that they realized that they were ahead of schedule and that they were going to be able to do the first coating of the stain. They were able to call their painter. He was going to come on Monday to start the painting job but he was able to start it on Saturday. He matched it perfectly to our family room. We're very happy both with the quality and the installation. Renewal by Andersen delivered. We'll certainly look at them if we ever get to the point to replace any of our windows.

Rich, the rep from Renewal by Andersen spent almost three hours with us because we had to two different locations that we were going to do. Then one of the locations, we weren't going to do until maybe three or four months from now. But he was so thorough in explaining 'cause we didn't know what the best application was, like which window or product would suit us. Then every question that I had, he went over it again.

Once we got a ballpark on one location, we told him what we were going to do on the other one and asked him to give us a quote on it. He did the same thing with that, which was a totally different application and totally different kinds of products. So, we were talking about doors, windows, sliding glass doors, and replacing existing stuff. It was a very complex conversation.

We asked Rich if we could negotiate a better deal if we were doing both locations at the same time. Each one of them was about 30,000 and when you put them together, it was 60,000. The budget was about $4,000 less than what the total number was. So he said that he would ask his supervisor. Rich called back again and they were able to do something. It was still about $1,500 more than what I wanted to spend. I asked him if they could figure out a way to come up with this difference because it was a lot of money. Then within an hour, what the supervisor ended up telling Rich was that he had sharpened his pencil as much as he possibly could, that the only other solution was that the person would take a lesser commission on the sale and he agreed to absorb whatever that incremental difference was between our budget and what Renewal could do.

I felt very comfortable and confident that the quote Renewal gave me was a good deal for the both of us. Even though he spent that much time, I didn't feel bad that Rich had to take it out of his own pocket because he spent the time anyhow. If we did the deal, he would get something and if we didn't do the deal or half the deal, he'd get half anyhow.

We had replacement windows, top of the line, the best that they could do. We had two windows that have screens on that slide back and forth that we put into a wall that didn't have windows before. We had 13 replacement windows and these two windows on one location that we had. Then on the second location, we had three sliding glass doors put in, a 16-foot, a 12-foot, and an eight-foot, and then we had a kitchen window replaced that opens out. The cost was expensive. But you get what you pay for. It was probably 20% more than what anybody else was. But these things are gorgeous and efficient. They're perfect. There's nothing that I would change about them.

If you want quality and if you want the best, there's nobody who does it better than Renewal by Andersen. The customer service, the workers, the people who did the installation are extraordinarily competent. I was here while they were putting in the wall and they measured two and three times. Everything was precise and they didn't cut corners.

We had Renewal by Andersen install our bay window several years ago and we were so impressed. We picked them because at that time, they were the cheapest on the market that I could find. The bay window was a big project and I appreciated what they did and how they did it. Then I had them back a couple years later to do two more windows. I also had them back last fall to do the rest of the house.

The installers were fantastic. They were very neat and they were laying down pads to protect the carpeting. They were efficient in that they came across an exterior window that had actually had some rotting going on the frame. They went off and got the right kind of lumber and they brought it back and installed it. They knew what had to be done. They could have just told me to do it and I certainly would have, but they took the initiative and they did a good job.

The consultant was courteous. He wore a mask and was careful in touching things. The communication was very clear. He had a computer right there and he showed me exactly what I would be paying with the scenarios that I gave him. He very patiently walked me through all of that. At the end of the interaction, I determined that the cheapest way to go was to finish putting in the rest of the windows.

My windows are so beautiful! They're easy to open. One of the biggest thrills I had after they were installed was in the bathroom. I can now open that window after I get out of the shower and I can get all the steam out of the bathroom just like that. It’s so wonderful! Renewal by Andersen was efficient, polite, and goes above and beyond the call of what they agreed to do. The communication was incredible during the whole installation process with the installers. The gentleman that came out to measure the windows actually came back and did a re-measure on a questionable window and I was very impressed with his meticulous approach to measuring the window to make sure it was would fit precisely. Overall, the experience was wonderful.

We looked at a couple other competing companies out there. We did the regular consumer walkthrough at Home Depot to check what was out there and based on what we saw on feedback from the internet, it seemed that Renewal by Andersen had the most accessible rate in terms of installation. The other big factor was if there were issues though, the positive responses to how those repairs were handled by them were overwhelmingly positive. We bought slider windows and they gave us an estimation for the timeline. It was just that there was a hiccup on our end. We had gridded windows originally and we asked the homeowners’ association if we could go through with clear rather than do the grids. It took a month and a half to finally hear back from our homeowners’ association saying I don't need to call them about that. I could do whatever I want.

One thing that Renewal by Andersen may be able to do on the side is to contact the homeowners’ association directly rather than the consumer doing it. That may help to push things along in that sense. I basically had to tell my homeowners’ association that my neighbor got stuff done and he got approved in a week. Why does it need a month and a half for our place to find out whether or not I can handle the inside?

But then from the sales to the guy that came in and did the measurements, they were fantastic, no pressure, and very honest about what the sales were and what the cost savings were. Originally, we talked about having a whole house done. It just wasn't really within our budget, and rather than saying, “So long, pal. Good luck. Talk to another company,” he actually took the time to work with me, work within our budget to get the most important windows done, and still get it in an area where it would be not cost-prohibitive. Excellent job. I’ve already recommended a couple of people around the neighborhood here to definitely go with this company. I had an easy experience.

My advice to you is not to install a new entry door during the winter time as unlike the window replacement, too much cold air came into the house and I was freezing my butt off! I had an install scheduled for mid December, and was told by the salesman at the time of purchase in September that the installation would be rescheduled if the temperature fell below 32 degrees; I was concerned because I didn't want the temperature inside my house to fall to uncomfortable temperatures. I checked the weather forecast a few days prior to the install and it called for sub 32 degree weather on the installation days so I called the install office to reschedule but was met by incredulity: "the salesman misspoke" said the install manager concerning sub 32 degree installations and they came as scheduled.

Ultimately the new windows and door will keep me warmer in winter and cooler in summer so I didn't argue with them and let the job proceed on schedule. It was very uncomfortable in the house while they replaced the entry door at an outside temperature of 10 degrees; they started the install when it was 3 degrees outside! The installers did a great job, were neat and courteous, and very skilled and I would give them a FIVE STAR RATING. The custom made windows and door are of very high quality and made an immediate difference in insulating my home from the cold. I would recommend Renewal by Andersen to anyone looking to upgrade their existing windows and doors. Just don't schedule the door replacement in cold weather no matter what they tell you.

Good morning - Thanks for the feedback! With our special winter installation process, our installers can typically get old windows out and new windows in within 5 minutes so that we're minimizing outdoor exposure to your home. Since it sounds like this wasn't the case for you, I'll forward your feedback onto the team you worked with so they can look into this and make sure it doesn't happen again. So thank you for sharing your experience with us. And thank you for choosing Renewal by Andersen. Should you need us for concerns or questions down the road, please don't hesitate to let us know. Have a wonderful rest of the year - Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I liked the speed at which Renewal by Andersen could get things done and the warranty. They replaced a door and eight windows. The timeframe was going to be within a month and a half, but it took longer due to some other issues. Nonetheless, I'm happy with the product. They're not leaking.

The timeline they provided was a short period of time considering the pandemic and they kept the timeline. The installer got the installation done in a day that they said they would. It was perfect and he cleaned up everything.

Work recently completed included installing 9 Andersen windows. The finished product install looks great! More importantly, the team they hired to install the windows also had to repair the damage & rot under a double-window unit. The attention to detail by the team & their craft knowledge to make the extensive repairs made all the difference to keeping the project on track, excellent repairs, & attention to detail, down to patching a small area in another room without being asked to do so. We 100% recommend Andersen windows & the installation team. Yes, the windows are expensive. We ordered in March 2021, installation was September 2021 with the delay due to our jobs, not due to Andersen, they were ready to do the install in May 2021.

Lead-time is comparable for Andersen patio doors and ProVia patio doors.

Typically the lead-time is about 4-8 weeks.

In Andersen’s case, more exotic wood doors can sometimes take a bit longer.

Providing accurate pricing for doors is difficult because each company includes different factors in their base pricing.

To give you an idea of what pricing is for Andersen and ProVia doors we've provided pricing for an Andersen 200 Series gliding door and an Endura ProVia door below.

You'll notice that in this case, the Andersen option is less costly and they include hardware in their base price. ProVia's door is more expensive because applying paint to vinyl is a complicated and time-consuming process.

Both Andersen and ProVia's product lines are full of variability.

If you are looking to purchase patio doors for your home both of these brands would certainly have something that will match your vision. Of course, these aren't the only brands manufacturing patio doors so there's plenty more to explore.

We hope this comparison gives you a good idea of how these brands differ and what options you can look for in other brands.
