56. Impress with Front Door Storage

The usual go-to is to toss your purse and scarf onto the couch when you get home, but having an organized space near the front door will keep your furniture clear of your things. Add a small bench for coats, some hooks for scarves and bags, and a higher shelf for decor to spruce the area up a bit. When you live in an apartment, space can often be limited, so every item must have a specific place to go. Ensuring everything has a place that helps avoid clutter and chaos. It also lessens the amount that you have to clean up.

When you get home, the first thing you do is take off your shoes, coat, and put your bag down. Even if your space is limited, having some sort of front door storage is an excellent option for your apartment. It will help reduce the likelihood that your items such as coats, bags, or shoes are dropped throughout your space. You can even add small hooks to hang your keys. It can be helpful because you won’t have to worry about where things are in the morning. Instead, you will feel confident knowing they are right where you left them – in the front door storage.

As you head out to the store or work, you can check the message center to see anything you need to know.

Do you ever think of something and not write it down because you feel confident you will remember it? Most stores, including grocery or retail stores, have plenty of pallets, and often they are willing to give them away. You might even want to grab a few and hang up a few different pallet shelves throughout your apartment. You and your partner can design the pallet shelves however you prefer and make them as large as possible. Go with an even arrangement or asymmetrical; it will look great in your apartment regardless. Once you are finished building and hanging the shelf, add some candles or photos to the stand. The shelves are a great way to spend time together building

You start by sticking your hand in between each cushion until you can locate it, hoping that each one will be the one. If this happens to you a lot, the good news is that there’s a solution to prevent you from having to dig through the couch each time you want to relax.

Every time you walk through your apartment, you might find yourself avoiding that squeaky toy or dodging that bone to avoid stubbing your toe. Being in a smaller space might mean that your pet may not also have a space to call his own. Fix that problem by building a toy box dedicated to your dog’s toys and adorn the corner with some funny pictures and sayings. It keeps your dog happy and your floor clean.

Having a designated corner for all of your dog’s toys treats, and maybe even their bed will help keep your apartment organized. As you find yourself and your significant other decorating your dog’s space, you can decide what personal touches to add. You might want to add a few photos of your dog when they were a puppy. You could also add some pictures of your fur-baby in their favorite places or memories. The sky is truly the limit! Just be sure to get a box that is large enough to fit all their toys. Who knows, maybe you can even teach them to put their toys away!

47. Create a Work Corner

This past year has caused many changes to our daily lives, including both work and personal aspects. One of the biggest changes is how many people now found themselves working from home. If you are like me, when it was decided that we would work from home, you may not have had a space set up. That can be even more challenging if you are in a smaller area and don’t have all of the extra room to add a home office. The good news is that you can stay organized by getting an L-shaped table for the corner of your room.

It will help you to work out of the way from the rest of the room and still provide you with enough space so that you don’t feel cramped. A dedicated work corner is a perfect environment to ensure you can focus on the work at hand and not entirely disrupt your home environment. Depending on your size and preference, there are many options out there. An L-shaped desk is a great option to maximize the space you have and give you such a great workspace that you might never want to return to the office!

One would think that being an artist takes years of practice, dedication, and patience. However, you can create your very own striking art piece with just some nails and wood. How cool is that? You would start by drawing out the design you want with a pencil and fill in the shape by hammering in the nails. If you are not comfortable going free-hand, use a pencil to trace a piece of paper with your choosing design. All you need is a board, a hammer, your stencil design, and some nails! 44. Fall in Love with Ladder Shelves

If you have limited space in your apartment, you might want to seek out decorating ideas that don’t require a lot of space, energy, or time. You would look out for either smaller pieces or those that are tight against the wall. An easy way to decorate your space is to put an old wooden ladder to use by turning it into a set of shelves. Like most, when you think of ladders, I think of using them to reach higher places. It would not have been something I would have thought to use as a piece of inside decor. How neat is it that it has so many different uses?

Once you have your ladder shelf or shelves installed, you can continue decorating to make it your own. It is an excellent place for small photo frames that won’t necessarily fit well anywhere else. A fun idea is to show your relationship’s growth through the photos as you go up the ladder. You can start with your first picture together on the bottom and gradually move through your relationship as you move upwards. Your friends and family will be able to see how you have progressed through your love story. Leave your ladder looking weathered or slap a new coat of paint on its body.

43. Create a Counter/Kennel Combo

Apartments often require you to get creative about the space that you have. When you are decorating, it is essential to maximize the space you have in the most functional way possible. However, you also need to ensure you are not creating a cluttered space if you are like me. In an apartment, sometimes there just isn’t enough room for both of you and the dog to have their own dedicated space. You might want to consider a counter space that has a kennel underneath for your fur baby. This way, you still have room for your belongings and personal items while your dog still has his bed.

It is vital to create a safe space for your four-legged friends. One of the coolest pieces of furniture serves a dual purpose as both a furniture stand and a dog kennel. You can use it as an entertainment stand, or you can keep it more casual with some photos, candles, and even some unique pieces. It is a great way to let your style shine while also ensuring that your dog has a comfortable, spacious place to rest up every night. If you are handy, you might even consider building your own. Don’t worry if you are not handy; you can find these in different styles and sizes.

40. Purchase Organizational Tools

Being organized can have many benefits. Not only will you know where items are when you need them, but it can also provide you with peace of mind and prevent chaos. Some people thrive on organization, and even the mere thought of being disorganized can create stress. When working with a smaller space, such as an apartment, you have to be creative about becoming and maintaining being organized. If you don’t have the freedom to have a designated office to keep everything organized, try finding a corner within the apartment that can be dedicated to your organizational efforts.

Keeping notes of all the tasks you have to take care of the day is difficult; they can get lost, and how do you tell the old ones from the new ones? There are many organizational tools and resources to incorporate into your daily life. Try using a calendar, marker board, and labeled slots to keep all of your notes, bills, and schedules organized. You can leave the mason jars on your countertops for easy access, or you can place them up on a shelf. You are guaranteed to get questions from guests that come to visit. Don’t hesitate to add multiple mason jars to accommodate all of your kitchen utensils. You might want to put spatulas in one, whisks in another, and wooden spoons in a third. There is no limit when it comes to decorating the mason jars and incorporating them in your kitchen.

37. Install Interesting Lighting

If you need something to speak out about in your apartment, go for an exciting way to light your space. The best part of decorating your own room with your significant other is determining and then merging your two personal styles into one. If you prefer neutral, subtle pieces and want one piece of decor to pop, the lighting is it! Whatever your style is, there are a plethora of options available. A unique lighting fixture will bring character to any room and will diffuse the light into a soft glow that is less harsh on the eyes.

If you are like me, you might prefer more subtle decor pieces that can grow with me as I move through the seasons and phases of life. However, you might still want that one piece of decor that will get your guests talking. Alternatively, perhaps your significant other is the complete opposite and likes statement pieces. That is a great way to compromise. Allow your outgoing significant other to choose a lighting fixture that is not unique but reflective of their style and preference. As a bonus, lighting fixtures can be more easily swapped out than the rest of a room’s decor.

36. Stencil your Floors

Many apartments have standard, neutral flooring throughout. You can bring some life to your tiled floors by getting a fancy stencil and painting your floors. The unique touch will bring some busy-ness to your possibly-drab apartment and make it look even more elegant. Be sure that you can redo this paint easily when you’re ready to leave, though; you don’t want to lose your security deposit. You might even learn a little bit about each other and how artistic or patient you both are. The floor stencils are a cool way to add a personal touch, dependent on your preference. If you don’t want to stencil each tile, you could also just do a few here and there.

35. Double Up the Workspace

When you are in a limited area, you have to get creative. You can use a single desk and split it up with shelving to create a location you both can share. Include baskets on the side for your reading material or work supplies, and you have a cozy nook where you can talk to each other.

Get a single table that is longer to ensure that you each still have plenty of room to work and function after adding the middle shelving divider. The shelves in the middle are added space to allow you to put up pictures, store your notebooks, or house your sticky notes. The doubled-up workspace will almost make you feel like you are back in your office cubicle. You just have to hope that your new coworker doesn’t talk too much. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to convince your new coworker to get lunch with you!

34. Hang Large Mirrors

Just because you might have a small space doesn’t mean that it has to feel small. There are many ways to maximize the space you have and make it feel larger than it is. Some of this is accomplished in how you arrange your furniture or how many belongings you allow in your home. The rest comes down to the decor that you choose and whether the pieces make it feel larger or smaller. Try adding a large mirror near your entryway, which will make your apartment look much bigger than it is.

Go for a frameless mirror for a smoother transition, or choose a frame that matches your place’s decor. To kick it up a notch, try adding a nearby pendant lighting to refract off the mirror and make the room even brighter. You will be left amazed at the large mirror’s impact and the illusion of a much larger space that it creates. Not only will the large mirror make your apartment space feel and look bigger, but it can also be used as a statement piece within your home. It’s always a bonus when one piece can serve multi-purposes!

33. Get a Bathroom Caddy

Have you ever found yourself in a room with limited counter space? Often in apartments, the counter space is small in bathrooms and not much more fits besides your toothbrush. That’s why it is even more critical to maximize what you have. If you have any hair or makeup items, they can quickly overpower the counter space you do have. Maximize the counter space you have by adding attractive bathroom caddies to the mix. The bathroom caddies are great options as you can have them positioned next to your counter and still have all of your favorite products and tools within an arm’s reach.

If you choose to get one with wheels, you can transport your towels and other assorted toiletries to the laundry room or the garbage can when they need to be discarded. Some bathroom caddies offer multiple layers or buckets. You can store your hairdryer, curling iron, and flat iron in one bucket and then put all of your makeup products and brushes in another. You can add clean towels or rolls of toilet paper in one of the other buckets to ensure that your bathroom is properly stocked without taking up too much unnecessary space. Many options are depending on the size you need.

32. Don’t Forget Your Balcony

When you have a smaller space, you always want to make the most of every square inch. Whether you are in an apartment or a single home, you will want to utilize the balcony and porch area to make it as relaxing and inviting. At the same time, you want to make sure that as you choose your decor, it has pieces of your taste and touch even for your outside space. Your interior may look great, but if you are fortunate to have a balcony off of your apartment, don’t forget to dress it up too.

Set out a pair of comfortable chairs and some string lights to dress it up a little bit. Make it feel like a tiny home away from home when you need some fresh air. You can add a small table in between the chairs so that you can enjoy dinner outside with your significant other. Enjoy a romantic evening by adding a candle outside and soaking in the entire relaxing atmosphere. You may even want to add some mats to create a more comfortable space where you can kick off your shoes after a long day of work.

31. Lower the Bed

If you have lower ceilings in your apartment, you might want to brainstorm ways to make the ceiling appear higher or the room larger. One way you can do this relatively inexpensive is to bring the bed closer to the ground for a more comfy feel. When you climb into bed, it will feel more like you are falling. The lowered bed will give the perception that the ceilings are even taller than they are. The simple change will provide you with a lot more real estate with the walls to work with to add more decor.

Lowering your bed is a pretty inexpensive change. If you are in the market for a new bed frame, you can search for platform beds that do not require a box spring. Without the box spring, your mattress will naturally sit lower on the frame, and it will give you that higher ceiling feels. It can help elongate the walls and will offer you more wall space where your headboard rests. With all that extra room, you can add a gallery wall and showcase some of your most loved portraits of you and your significant other. A lowered bed can also be easier to get in and out of.

30. Hang Frameless Pictures

When people think of hanging pictures, most people think of framed photos. It can often be a nuisance to find precisely the right size and style of frame to match the look you are going for. One interior design suggestion to decorate your apartment is to skip the frames altogether and place photos or paintings directly on the wall. Now I know that it sounds a little crazy and maybe even a little chaotic, but don’t worry. The frameless pictures will make your walls look spacious, and there’s no need to worry about getting everything level.

You can place your belongings as creatively as you want for a photojournalistic feel or line them up perfectly to look more polished. The best part is that you have full reign to be as precise as you prefer to be. You might want to give it more of an effortless look. Instead of purchasing photo frames, you can buy some big clips and hang your photos from them. That gives more of a photo darkroom type of feel. It also allows you not to feel so restricted or confined in expressing your creative side and style. You can make all of your photos black and white or in color to give a more uniform look.

29. Add More Plants

Plants can brighten the place up, but one of the best places for them is in your bedroom. Plants can purify the air of an apartment, removing even mild toxins that may be harmful to your lungs. Moreover, during the day, they increase oxygen levels through photosynthesis, so you’ll have cleaner air to breathe. Plants are a great piece of decor that can be placed throughout your apartment, although best in your bedroom. You can add some smaller plants to the shelves or countertops throughout your apartment. However, you might also be interested in larger, potted plants that fit right into the corner.

While plants sound like a great option and have many benefits, if you are like me, you don’t exactly have a green thumb. Every house plant that I have ever brought into my home has sadly not made it despite my efforts. For me, I would likely choose some fake plants to serve as decor. Some smaller plants would be an excellent option for the living room coffee table, the bedroom shelves, or the kitchen countertop. If I’m feeling lucky, I might splurge and get one real plant and cross all of my fingers that it survives.

28. Paint a Colorful Bathroom

Bathrooms tend to be the more drab rooms in the apartment, but they don’t have to be for you and your partner. Most apartment bathrooms are pretty similar to their very neutral beige paint color and white finishes. Although being in an apartment may limit the renovations or changes you can make to the larger aspects of the room, there are still plenty of options to spruce up the space and make it your own. One budget-friendly way is to add a colorful shower curtain or some bright towels to contrast all of that white tile. Adding in a pop of color helps to break up all of the neutral colors.

While you’re working to give your bathroom some life, don’t forget storage too. Try including a handy ladder shelf for all of your towels, toiletries, and baskets for additional storage. That is a great option to house some of those extras that you might otherwise not have enough space for. Depending on your specific setup, you can also consider adding some baskets and bins underneath your sink cabinet. For a finishing touch, add some colorful wall decor such as a painting or picture that ties it all together. All of these ideas are pretty easy and quick changes that will transform your bathroom into a completely new space.

27. Create a Gallery Wall

Have you ever seen a gallery wall? They have become increasingly popular pieces of decor throughout homes. Some people like to put them in the living space where everyone can see them; others prefer to put them on the walls going upstairs. They are a great way to dress your place up with some framed pictures on one wall. Go for a single theme, such as a family vacation or photoshoot, or make the photos as random as possible. It will be a talking piece for guests who will spend a reasonable amount of time in that spot of your apartment.

When creating a gallery wall, you can add as many or as few pictures as you want. Some people have nine photos, whereas others have sixteen. All of your photographs can be in black and white, color, or a combination of the two. You can align all of your photos in a neat and level area where they are the same distance apart and in the exact frames. On the other hand, if you prefer not to have as much structure, you can also choose frames with different sizes and arrange them in a less structured manner. There is no right or wrong way to do a gallery wall!

26. Support Your Bed With a Pallet

Pallets are becoming increasingly popular due to all of the projects that can be built from them. Some people are making shelves, coffee tables, or even entertainment stands. With all that you can create from some pallets, it should not be any surprise that you can also make a bed frame and support from them! You can skip the box spring and raise your bed from the ground with just a few simple pallets. Paint the wood white and slip them under your mattress for elevation. This apartment decor will even give you storage space under your bed and hide away those items you don’t want others to see.

Pallets have so many different uses and are a great way to spruce up and decorate your apartment with your significant other. If you do not have access to them, check out the local stores as they often have pallets, they are willing to give away at little to no cost. The pallet bed support can offer your apartment a unique look and is sure to be a talking point for anyone that sees it. You can leave the pallets their natural wood color or paint them to go with the other pieces of decor in your room or apartment.

25. Hang Your Curtains Higher

When you are working with a smaller space, you want it to feel bigger than it is. There are several tricks in order to do this. Curtains are usually one of the first things you tackle when you move into any space or can be the first option when you are looking to spruce up a space. Curtains bring warmth, style, and texture to your room’s design. You can make your window, and ultimately your area appears larger than it is by hanging your curtains higher than the top of your window. Below are a few things to keep in mind.

The first step is making sure that since you are hanging them higher, you are also purchasing longer curtains. You’ll need to consider whether the curtains will be strung straight onto the curtain rod or if you want to use hooks to attach them. You can install your curtain rod as close to the ceiling as you would like to give the room a more dramatic feel. Once you find your spot, mark it, check for a stud, and start drilling. This simple alteration will give your space a brand new feel. Not only will your window appear larger, but your curtains will also look more high-end.

24. Re-Style A Bookshelf

You might be an avid reader who enjoys diving into a good book and escaping reality for a little bit, or you might not be. You or your significant other might also enjoy reading but not have enough books to fill an entire bookshelf. If you find that your apartment comes with a dedicated bookshelf, you might be wondering what you could do with that space. We all know that utilizing every amount of space is essential when you are living in an apartment. You can look up plenty of ways to decorate a bookshelf, but it is a blank canvas for whatever you would like.

Now, I know what you might be thinking, a bookshelf is for books, right? If you are someone who loves to read, you might not have enough books to fill up an entire bookshelf, but you still might have some of your favorite novels. You can re-style the bookshelf by placing them throughout and then incorporating some personal decor pieces in the spaces. You could even add some vases and sculptures to the mix. Don’t be afraid to throw in some of your favorite couple photos to put them on display too. The bookshelf doesn’t have to be solely for books!

23. Set Up A Breakfast Nook

We have talked about setting up a reading nook within your apartment, but what about a breakfast nook? That can be an ideal option to add to your apartment where space can be limited. It does not have to be fancy and can be as simple as you want it to be. Try to designate a small space to be that comfy nook where you can enjoy your morning coffee. It is a bonus if the nook is near a window or balcony, and you can watch the sunrise too. Breakfast nooks are meant to be cozy and not necessarily somewhere you would eat all of your meals, although you could.

If space allows, try using a smaller sized table and position it facing a window or balcony door. You can add a few chairs, stools, or maybe even a smaller bench. The breakfast nook can become the first spot in your morning routine, and you will look forward to getting up to start your morning off there. You can spruce it up a little bit by adding in some fresh flowers on the table or maybe even a candle. You are free to create a breakfast nook that has your style. It just goes to show that you can make this environment without having an actual built-in nook.

22. Spruce Up Your Entryway

Depending on your apartment’s layout, you may not have a grand foyer, but you may still have a space that could be considered your entryway. One easy way to decorate your apartment is to spruce up that space you will see when you first enter your home. It will also be the first spot that your friends and family see when they come over for dinner or drop by for a quick visit. A quick way to spruce it up is to add a console table to the room. There are many sizes and those that sit closer to the wall to avoid taking up too much space.

The console table is a great way to add a piece of furniture to that space. It also allows you to incorporate other decor pieces on top of it for a more finished look. You can add picture frames, vases, and flowers, or a candle. The style of your console table is whatever your style is. You can opt for a more traditional table and hang some modern abstract art above it. That gives the impression of a formal yet modern aesthetic. You can add some art above the console table and even below it to create that unfinished gallery wall look.

21. Swap Out Your Throw Pillows

When you are trying to decorate or redecorate a space, you might want to explore all of the ways you can do so without breaking the bank. Sometimes it starts with the paint on the walls or a picture that is hanging up. However, when you are in an apartment, you have to be mindful of what changes you are making and whether they are okay per your signed lease. A quick and relatively inexpensive way to decorate is to swap out your throw pillows. Perhaps you have had the throw pillows in your living room for a long time. Swapping them out is the easiest way to spruce up a space.

You might even want to swap out the throw pillows that are in your bedroom too. Swapping out the throw pillows can give the space a fresh new feeling. Add a new paint color or a new piece of hanging wall decor, and the area will be completely transformed. You can choose a brighter pillow to brighten up the room or a darker color if your walls are light to provide some contrast. There are also throw pillows that can offer a more modern or boho vibe. You’ll be amazed at what exchanging your throw pillows can do.

20. Reupholster Your Furniture

Redecorating your space is a great way to create a new, fresh feel in an area. Often, when you think of redecorating or even decorating, you think of buying new pieces. It can all add up very quickly from furniture, wall decor, plants, curtains, rugs, and even pillows. The great news is that you don’t have to go out and break the bank to decorate your apartment with your significant other. Instead, take a few minutes to examine and review what you already have and what you might be able to repurpose to reuse and contribute to the new space.

Furniture can be upholstered to freshen up your entire space automatically. You can reupholster your bed headboard in your bedroom by finding a fabric and pattern that suits your style and decor. In your dining room, you can reupholster the seat cushions on your dining room chairs. If you are interested or feel brave to tackle more of a bigger project, try reupholstering a chair in your living room. You and your partner will not only feel a sense of accomplishment, but you will save some money along the way. Your room will feel like a brand new space that you can enjoy and create memories in.

19. Color Block Your Wall

Paint can go a long way when you are decorating a space. It can change the room or apartment’s entire vibe based on how it fits with the decor and layout. It has often been said that light paint colors help brighten up an area and make it feel large. On the other hand, darker colors have been assumed to make a room feel smaller. Depending on your apartment, you might want to choose one over the other. However, you should always check with your landlord to make sure it is okay to do so or risk losing your security deposit!

If you get the green light to go ahead, painting your walls with your partner can be a great activity. You might even want to try color-blocking your wall. It means that the top half or three-quarters of your wall is one color and the remaining wall space is another color. You can make the top part of the wall light and paint the bottom darker or vice versa. Some people even choose two light colors to maintain the room’s brightness while also giving it a little contrast. That is where your style comes into play because you can make it anything you want!

18. Apply Accent Wallpaper

Back in the day, wallpaper was a dreaded word. It usually meant a lot of time and patience. The process to apply it was a painful one if you struggled to get it figured out. However, nowadays, wallpaper has come a long way. They don’t all require that lengthy process. It can be intimidating to use wallpaper if you are a beginner or are unfamiliar with applying it. Wallpaper does offer the ability to add to a space. You can have floral patterns or even solid colors. The process has been revamped to be fast, easy, and have an enormous impact on the space.

If you want to get your toes wet and not apply wallpaper to an entire room, you can add an accent space. Choose the smallest wall in the room of your choice and get to work. It is a great way to spend time with your significant other, and the result will shock you. It is incredible what an accent wall can do for a room. Even better is that most wallpaper is relatively easy to remove and doesn’t cause any damage the paint underneath. Just pick out the pattern or style you like, read the directions, and dive on in!

17. Introduce A New Throw Blanket

If you are anything like me, I love having throw blankets throughout my home. I have several in the bedroom, several in the living room, and a few more in the guest room. There is something about a good throw blanket that provides comfort and makes the room feel incredibly cozy and inviting. When you decorate your apartment, you can incorporate a throw blanket into the room to give it a different vibe. If your bedroom is full of very neutral bedding and decor, adding a colorful throw blanket at the end of the bed could transform the entire space.

The living room might be the complete opposite story. You might have many vibrant or bright pieces in that space, so opting for a more neutral tone blanket can help balance it all out. If you don’t prefer solid colors, try adding in a patterned blanket for an extra pop. You can hang the throw blanket over the back of the couch or hang it on a blanket ladder propped up against the wall. Incorporating a new throw blanket into any space is a great way to experiment with colors and patterns before fully committing to more significant purchases such as furniture or wall art.

16. Choose Statement Art

When decorating your new space, it can be incredibly overwhelming, especially if you don’t feel like you have a knack for interior design. Going into a store or even multiple stores to try and find individual pieces that will come together to give you the exact look you are looking for can be exhausting. Decorating is supposed to be fun, so try not to stress over it too much! You can avoid mixing and matching multiple individual pieces but purchasing statement art to place throughout your apartment. You and your partner can make it even more impressive by each picking out the statement pieces for a room.

Statement art can take the form of a large painting, a sign, a lighting fixture, or a rug. The statement art is guaranteed to take a simple space and transform it into a completely new area. You can choose large scale photography pieces or something more abstract and vibrant to make a statement. Like selecting a new throw blanket, you might want to incorporate statement pieces that help offer some contrast against the other decor. For instance, choose a vibrant rug for the living room where the furniture and walls are neutral. By choosing larger pieces, it can reduce the number of items that you have to put together.

15. Add A Bench At The End of Your Bed

Your bedroom is supposed to be a haven. The place and the room where you can go to unwind after a long day, relax, and be refreshed to take on the day. That is why the way you decorate your bedroom is so important. The bedding, blankets, throw pillows, and wall decor all add to the overall feel and vibe that your room provides. It can leave you feeling calm and energized, or it can add to already existing chaos. In an apartment, you always want to maximize all of the space you can, including your bedroom.

Try incorporating a bench at the end of your bed. It doesn’t have to be a large bench and can be kept relatively narrow so that it doesn’t require a lot of space. A bench is a great option for a piece of decor that will tie your room together. It can help anchor your bed, serve as an extra spot for you to sit down, or serve as storage for those extra blankets and pillows. The bench at the end of your bed can be one that matches the bed frame or bedding. You might also want to add your personal touch and make the bench a statement piece in your room.

14. Create A Statement Wall

We mentioned adding a statement piece to your apartment. Whether that be a piece of art, rug, lighting fixture, or furniture, there are plenty of options. If you enjoy the vibe that a statement piece creates, why not make an entire statement wall? You can choose to create a statement wall in a common area like the living or dining room, which is sure to be a topic of conversation, or add it to your bedroom. The best part about a statement wall is that you can choose and use anything to make the wall pop.

That might be an opportunity if you or your significant other collect items to put on display for all of your friends and family. A statement wall can be made out of anything. You might find some vintage dishes that would look great placed upon the wall as a piece of art. On the other hand, you might prefer to add some less fragile items and opt to go with some wicker baskets. There are so many options to create your statement wall within your home. Do some research and let the creative juices flow!

13. Make Wall Art

Decorating an apartment can be incredibly challenging. You are often restricted with the existing flooring, cabinet, and wall finishes. However, that doesn’t mean that there are no options for you and your partner to revamp the space and truly make it your own! A fun way to do this is with wall art. It is always an option to purchase pre-made wall art, but how much fun would it be to spend an evening together creating your own? It would be an excellent excuse for a date night and will be memories that you can treasure for years to come.

Now you might be thinking that you are not very artistic, but that is truly the fun of it all! It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can get some budget-friendly canvases at a local craft store. Next, you’ll want to grab some paint and maybe even some brushes. One popular trend is splatter paint, which requires no brushes and just involves splattering the paint on the canvas to create an abstract look. The best part is that creating your own wall art allows you to express your style and incorporate it into the apartment you share.

12. Get Wall Decals

Another decorating option that is great for renters is to purchase wall decals. They are generally inexpensive and readily available. The majority of them are designed to be easily removable, which is a huge bonus when it comes time for you to move out of your lease. Some decals can even be applied to furniture and floors, which means that nothing is off-limits when it comes to decorating your new space. The wall decals are a great way to add some contrast and color without breaking the bank. It is also a great option if you are someone who likes to redecorate often.

The wall decals give you the freedom and flexibility to change them as frequently as you would like. This way, when you are six months into your lease and want to give the living room a little upgrade, you can easily remove the old and replace it with some new ones. You can even make your wall decals to save even more. Purchase a roll of removable, adhesive shelf liner. It can be easily cut into various shapes and designs and applied to the wall. When you are ready to leave, do not worry because it is just as easily removable as actual wall decals.

11. Hang A Curtain

Now, you might be saying that you know you are supposed to hang curtains over windows. However, I mean that curtains can be hung in many different areas, not just over your windows. You can get some inexpensive curtains and hang them along a wall to create a nice featured space. It will not only bring attention to the wall, but it can also provide texture and contrast to the rest of the decor. You might even wish to hang a curtain in the doorframe. For instance, if you have a master closet, it can be fun to hang a colorful curtain rather than a traditional door.

Curtains offer so much versatility when it comes to decorating a space. They can be used to cover windows, walls, and even doorways. One thing you may not have thought of is to use curtains as dividers. If you or your partner found yourselves working from home this past year, you may have scrambled to find some dedicated workspace. Some people have had to use their bedroom as their office since space is limited. A curtain can efficiently serve as a divider to help section of your work area to make you feel more at work. It can help you better concentrate without all the distractions.

10. Add Punches of Color

Many apartments are often painted neutral colors, with neutral carpets or flooring, and even more neutral finishes. While you may be limited on what you can change while you are there, you can still decorate in a way that adds your own personal touch and brightens up the room. It’s important not to feel stuck when looking for ways to add your style to a leased space. Try adding punches or pops of color throughout the area with your throw pillows and photo frames. What a great way to add some life to what can often be viewed as a drab space!

As you incorporate punches of color throughout your space, you’ll start to feel more at home. You can add pops of color with the photo frames you choose for your living space, the throw pillows in the bedroom, and even the kitchen towels. Often, these items are inexpensive, which allows you to upgrade your space without spending too much. You might also be able to visit a local thrift store for some of them and then personalize them by painting or reupholstering them. As you move into your next home, if the items don’t fit, you can easily donate or upgrade them again!

9. Use Tile Tattoos

Tile tattoos are tile stickers, or tile decals are one of the latest trends that offer the look of new tiles without the hassle or mess of re-tiling. They are most commonly used in the kitchen or bathroom. They are produced by several companies that offer a variety of designs, patterns, and even sizes. Tile tattoos are an excellent option for apartments because they can create the feeling of a whole new space, or they offer a pop of color to an otherwise bland room. The adhesive tiles are more appealing to renters because there is a minimal cost, and it doesn’t harm the existing tile.

You and your significant other can determine if you prefer a solid color tile look or a pattern that can serve as a statement to your styles. You’ll want to take accurate measurements to determine exactly how many tiles you will need. Many companies offer tile tattoos, with some specializing in solid colors and others showing patterns to create the vintage feel. They are incredibly easy to apply and easy to remove with no leftover residue. The bonus is that they are also waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them being damaged during your apartment stay.

8. Decorate with Washi Tape

You might be asking yourself, what is washi tape? It is a decorative adhesive tape that is made from traditional Japanese paper. It is commonly used for crafting or journaling. Unlike western paper, which is made from tree pulp, washi paper comes from Japanese shrubs. It is made from highly renewable resources and is biodegradable. The natural fibers that washi tape is made from has become the staple of crafters. It comes in all different kinds of colors and patterns that you can incorporate throughout your home. Like masking tape, it is a low-tack tape, so it will be easily removable from your walls without adding any damage.

Home decorators have made use of the versatile washi tape in many different ways. It is often used to hang wall art but has also been used to make decorative patterns on walls. The washi tape is durable, waterproof, and heatproof. In short, it is meant to withstand the conditions while being used. If you decide that you no longer want the washi tape up or the end of your lease nears, you can easily peel it off without damage. The best part is that it can be used again! You can use the washi tape to personalize your photo frames, home decor, or create that accent space.

7. Lay Down A Rug

Decorating your space with your significant other should be incredibly fun. It is an opportunity for the two of you to express your personal styles and then find a way to mesh them together to create a place that feels like home. One way you can incorporate each individual’s style is by adding rugs to your new home. It is also an excellent option for renters because they do not require any existing flooring changes. If you find that your apartment floors are not very appealing, throw down some new rugs to bring life back into the room.

Unlike some other changes you might make to a space, the rugs are something that you can take with you when your lease is up if you decide to move. Rugs don’t have only to be used where there is a bare floor. They can also be used to layer or cover up any existing wall-to-wall carpeting that doesn’t exactly match your style. You can even add throw rugs in the kitchen or bathroom. If they don’t have the rubber backing, grab some carpet tape for an easy and inexpensive do-it-yourself project. You’ll be amazed at how adding a rug can revamp a space.

6. Make Faux Roman Shades

Apartments tend to come designed with the standard window blinds that are extremely unappealing to the eye. Not to mention that they don’t always function as smoothly as they are supposed to! You could always go the traditional route and replace them with some standard curtains. However, if you are looking for a different and budget-friendly way to cover the blinds, try creating some faux roman shades. It is instrumental in the kitchen space or a breakfast nook. The first thing you will want to do is take some measurements and gather the necessary materials. Don’t worry. That is a project you can tackle together!

The first step is to measure your windows’ height and width and then visit your favorite local craft store. You will want to pick out a few yards of your favorite fabric. That might be a solid color or something with a pattern. Next, you’ll hem the fabric to fit the window width using some iron-on hem tape or no-sew fabric glue. Be sure to leave a pocket at the top of your material so that you can feed the curtain rod through. You’ll hang the curtain by putting a tension rod through the top pocket and suspending the curtain in the window. Lastly, suspend two more tension rods and drape the fabric over to create a roman shade’s folds.

20 Cool Young Couples Apartment Design Ideas

What is the image that comes to mind when you think of your first couples apartment? We’re willing to bet that, for most people, it was a tiny rented place, but one you grew to love and appreciate. A young couples apartment is usually small, but the design ideas featured in this article prove that it doesn’t have to be cramped, cluttered, or lack in the style department. Check out some wonderful interior design ideas for your living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, collected from the apartments of young people in love all around the world.

Living Room Design Ideas

1. Breezy in Barcelona

young couples apartment living-room-barcelona

This fresh, airy, luminous living-and-dining-room comes from a cleverly arranged small apartment in Barcelona we found on FresHome. It basically abides by all the design rules that a small couples apartment should uphold. The color scheme is light and breezy, and the open shelf allows the inhabitants to enjoy the outside view. Apart from that, the décor is eclectic enough to suit the diverse tastes of a young couple on the go.

2. Colorful Hipster Living Room in Puerto Rico

young couples apartment trendy-loft-living-room

We actually found this loft living room as a real estate listing on Espacios Realty Network, and were mesmerized by the playful way in which it employs color and décor elements. The main furniture is in somber and neutral tones. However, the rest all pops with color and visual treats. We especially like the clever storage solution for the two bikes in this couples apartment, the open shelves in the dining room area, and the retro-looking dining chairs. Bonus: a patch of ‘grass’ delineates the dining table space, making every meal feel like a picnic.

3. Urban Industrial in Barcelona

young couples apartment urban-industrial-living-room

When you’re young and renting (or buying) your first couples apartment, chances are you’re going to end up in an urban environment. This doesn’t mean that your existence needs to be dull and dreary, though. Actually, as the above living room (which is the same one at the top of this list) proves, the simple, urban, industrial style can make for wonderful day areas. Eclectic decorative elements mix with functional design staples, such as the blinds, the retro armchair, and the floor lamp. The end result is as cozy and inviting as it is unpretentious and functional.

4. Work and Play in Madrid

young couples apartment workspace-madrid-industrial-living-room

You can always trust the Spanish to make any room look young, no matter how small the home, or how limited the budget. Proof of this is this workspace corner of a tiny, yet colorful couples apartment in Madrid. A lot of attention to detail went into the design of this particular corner of the living room, to ensure the eclectic blend of the design elements goes together. On the one hand, the apparent brickwork lends the room a post-industrial, modern vibe. On the other, though, the traditional rug and stool add a touch of quaint charm to the space.

5. Patterned Colors in Sicily

colorful living room

This vibrant living room in Lipari, Sicily is proof that you can never have enough color in your home. The patterned, colorful decorative pillows are the statement pieces of this living room design, but the painting on the wall, which is also patterned, and the decorative items on the coffee table complete the eclectic look. The color in this living room is tempered by the white couches, providing the perfect balance.

Bedroom Design Ideas

6. Creamy Comforts in Russia

young couples apartment bedroom-sergey-baskakov

This lush, yet breezy bedroom actually belongs to a couples apartment designed by talented Russian designer, Sergey Baskakov. The light and simple color scheme works like a charm with the very low bed. This is actually an ingenious sofa, extended to accommodate two occupants. We also like how the bed is placed directly underneath the window, so it can bask in the glorious morning sunlight, for a cozy awakening. The contemporary painting of an elegant woman adds just the dash of color to this otherwise neutral room.

7. Light in a Scandinavian-Style Bedroom

young couples apartment bedroom-chandelier

Small, simple, and Scandinavian-looking, this tiny, yet cozy bedroom makes great use of modern lighting elements. On the one hand, there’s a desk lamp-like fixture on each side of the bed. This is for those lazy evenings spent curled up with your favorite novel. On the other, the romantic chandelier that hangs above the bed reminds you that each night can be special. To boot, the window lets the light of the sunshine in each morning, as if to make sure you wake up to yet another beautiful day every day.

8. Smart Storage in France

young couples apartment bedroom-loft-bed

Espace Loggia is a French furniture design company that offers innovative bed designs – such as this beautiful, elegant, and highly functional loft bed, specially designed for couples. Aside from the king-sized bed above, the set also includes stairs fitted with drawers for storage. It also has a sofa with drawers beneath it, in which you can store everything you need. The loft bed is a perfect solution for couples living in one-bedroom apartments or studios, especially for homes with very tall ceilings.

9. Romantic Times in NYC

young couples apartment bedroom-romantic-decor

Some might scoff and deem this bedroom setup as ‘too girly’, but we’re thinking it’s entirely appropriate for most young couples out there. The color scheme is as simple as it is effective. It’s white and dark brown, with dashes of red, meant to remind you how sweet life together can be. The truly magical design element is the canopy, with the overhanging garlands of LED lights. You don’t need to be out in nature to enjoy the sight of a starry sky, do you? You can also enjoy it from one of these studio apartments for couples.

10. Artsy Comfort in Connecticut

bedroom design with green walls

If you and your partner are both art lovers, you might want to decorate your bedroom in a way that reminds you of your passion for art. In the case of this Connecticut apartment found on Elle Decor, the walls are not the only ones beaming with art. The bedding, headboard, and curtains are also art pieces by themselves. If you truly want to make a statement with your bedroom, this is definitely the way to go. Bonus: the vibrant green color of the walls!

Kitchen Design Ideas

11. Blackboard Inspiration in Russia

young couples apartment kitchen-blackboard

When you’re young and in love, everything is a source of inspiration – and, as this creative kitchen from Int2 Architecture goes to show, your kitchen can inspire you, too. This open kitchen was designed with a small home in mind, and it’s fresh enough to belong in an urban young couples apartment. We particularly like the bright color scheme, the apparent brickwork on the walls, and the use of typography. We obviously love the blackboard covered wall section, which can become a canvas for all your projects, designs, and ideas.

12. Earthy and Minimalistic in Russia

young couples apartment open-kitchen-art-ugol

This sleek, contemporary kitchen belongs to a hip couples apartment designed by ART-UGOL. You wouldn’t guess just how small this entire home is by looking at the pictures. That’s because the designers gave it impressive stylistic coherence, by solely employing a white, black, and gray color palette. These hues are complemented by luminous tones of mixed wood. The open-plan kitchen is fully functional. It includes all the appliances a young couple would need to turn every meal into a feast.

13. Small & Cool in Tel Aviv

young couples apartment small-kitchen-tel-aviv

This kitchen encapsulates the look of the entire home in which it’s located. It sits inside a small apartment in Tel Aviv featured in Apartment Therapy. The overall look of the design is clean and contemporary. However, there’s plenty of retro chic details on each shelf, and in every nook and cranny. The challenge of designing this home lay in the fact that it actually is a young couples apartment. The two residents work from home, as graphic designers. They wanted to give each other plenty of separate space, but also take advantage of the open floor plan to spend quality time together.

14. Tiny & Cozy in Madrid

young couples apartment small-kitchen-madrid

Think your kitchen is small? Then look at this “miniature” kitchen, located inside a small apartment in the Malasaña neighborhood of Madrid, featured in Apartment Therapy. The home belongs to a young couple who moved there from LA. They were faced with the challenge of barely having a kitchen to speak of. However, this didn’t prevent them from designing a charming space to enjoy together. To boot, it also taught them discipline and thriftiness, since the kitchen only fits a tiny freezer and countertop oven.

15. Pastel Dream in Los Angeles

mint green kitchen

Justina Blakeney’s LA kitchen is the stuff of fairytales for sure. Modern fairytales, that is. Featured in House Beautiful, her cottage not only makes the most of the space available, but also manages to put together a lovely kitchen/dining room area. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the counter, which is a space that separates the kitchen from the dining area, but it can also be a dining area in itself. Of course, the pastel mint color used in the kitchen only enhances the modern, chic look of the cottage.

Bathroom Design Ideas

16. Mixed Tiles in Brazil

young couples apartment eclectic bathroom-tiles

Funky patterns and bold colors should feel right at home in any young couple apartment. This layout goes to show that sometimes, color and pattern coordination is overrated, at least where bathroom tiles are concerned. The crazy mix of tiles on the wall is beautifully offset by the square recessed sink and the wooden counter.

17. Four Across in Russia

young couples apartment bathroom-word-puzzle-tiles

That spells ‘love’! This funky set of bathroom tiles featured in Int2 Architecture is suitable both for a kids’ bathroom, as well as for the funky bathroom of a young couples apartment. It’s cute enough to work in any style of décor. Also, it’s bound to keep you inspired and entertained during your morning routine over the sink, as well as during a prolonged, relaxed bath. For a touch of color, employ a carpet with shades of yellow.

18. Marbled Luxury in Argentina

young couples apartment elegant-bathroom

There’s more than just a whiff of luxury in this sleek bathroom found on Dikidu, with its tones of beige and brown, offset by the sight of the bright red storage unit in the hallway. The floating cabinet and counter are minimalistic and edgy, while the round mirror and circular sink add a touch of femininity to this otherwise imposing space. Metal is also a notable presence in this bathroom, both in the chrome finishes of the faucets, but also via the décor elements on the counter. Talk about a couples apartment!

19. Dreamy Bathtub in Long Island

metal bathtub next to vintage rug and chair

If combining modern and traditional bathroom décor doesn’t bother you, you’re going to love this bathroom design idea featured in Architectural Digest. The bathtub has a modern feel, due to the material that it’s made of, and the fact that it is not connected to the wall, as most traditional bathtubs are. On the other hand, the rug, chair, and small table, as well as the curtains and painting on the wall, are more traditional, but somehow fit the entire décor perfectly.

20. Penthouse Style in London

bathtub next to two heaters and a table

While this bathroom we found on Architectural Digest is part of a London penthouse, that doesn’t mean you have to own a penthouse to get inspired by it. We love the use of space here, with the bathtub placed between two heaters, for those cold winter days, and the small table that is both useful and beautiful. The framed picture and the rubber ducks top it all off, giving the bathroom a homely, warm feel.

Final Thoughts

Young couples apartment designs don’t have to be expensive to be memorable. In fact, since most young people live in small apartments or homes, we tried to include design ideas that you would be able to apply to any space, regardless of its size. So, the next time you want to decorate your bedroom, living room, kitchen, or bathroom in your couples apartment, go back to these design ideas for some inspiration. 1Make It Open Air

If you're in the right climate for an open-air design, it's definitely worth considering for the romance factor alone. In this Hawaiian escape by Catherine Kwong, the accordion-style doors slide open to let in the breeze.

2Add Special Lighting

Hotel rooms always feel a little dreamier and more romantic than the average bedroom. So why not take notes to bring home with you? The Firehouse Hotel designed by ETC.etera is the perfect example. The Moroccan pendant lamps add a touch of brass while also shining a beautiful pattern throughout the space. Perfect for mood lighting!

3Pile On Soft Layers

Have you ever wanted to crawl into a bed more than you have right now? The moody gray velvet walls and matching headboard bring a smokey, texturally rich allure and mystery to the otherwise white, bright, and airy space designed by Alison Pickart. No artwork is needed, as these walls speak for themselves.

4Display Fluffy Florals

Roses are red and violets are blue, but have you met the most romantic flower of them all yet? We're talking about the fluffy, ethereal dried plant known as pampas grass. Corinne Marthern displayed it in this California bedroom for some minimalist romance.

5Lacquer Your Walls

The high-shine gloss of lacquer paint will make any space feel sleek and sexy in an instant. And in a shade of red like this one, things will heat up even more. Because the walls are so over the top, go with classic ivory bedding and traditional sconces to polish it all off.

6Add a Sitting Area

When you have enough space in your bedroom for an extra place to hang out that isn't your bed, create a mini (more intimate) living room. Follow this formula à la Romanek Design Studio: Two armchairs angled towards each other with a small coffee table or ottoman for drinks, a candle, and another decorative item.

7Highlight Repeating Motifs

With a recurring motif of soft curved lines and a balanced color palette of airy blush-beige and cool white with moodier navy accents, interior designer Heather Hilliard creates a romantic—but not in-your-face-romantic—atmosphere in this main bedroom.

8Mix Old With New

Equal parts classic and edgy, this space designed by ETC.etera is a masterclass in decorating a romantic bedroom. The curtains and built-in nook framing the bed introduces a sense of intimacy while the toile maintains a more traditional spirit.

9Light a Fire

A bedroom with a fireplace ignites the passion like no other. While the showstopper is clearly the fireplace, that textured paint and stone wall make this bedroom feel like an old-world sanctuary.

10Accentuate a Juliette Balcony

If your space features a Juliette balcony, then your bedroom is guaranteed to be romantic no matter how you decorate it. Here, Brigette Romanek of Romanek Design Studio dresses it down with linen bedding and sculptural light in true SoCal fashion.

11Create a Cocoon

Hang curtains in front of your bed to intensify the sense of privacy and intimacy. It'll feel like a little cocoon from the outside world. A fluffy comforter you'd never want to toss off doesn't hurt either.

12Emit a Rosy Glow

In this bedroom designed by Arent & Pyke, the plush carpet almost looks iridescent, radiating a sense of luxury and comfort. The textured panel headboard introduces the perfect contrast. For the ultimate touch of romance, hang light pink sheers that create a rosy glow throughout the space.

13Stay Grounded

A low-to-the-ground bed sets the pace for sexy bohemian energy. Loose linens are also a good call—the effortlessness makes the bed irresistible.

14Embrace Nostalgia

Designed by Elizabeth Georgantas, this bedroom is bound to feel romantic, thanks to its 273-year tenure and Nantucket location. The cracked beams are given a fresh coat of crisp white paint above an antique decoupaged bed for a high-contrast impact.

15Get Cheeky With Pillows

This bedroom gives "pillow talk" a whole new meaning. There's something sexy about the unexpectedness of a cheeky pillow in an otherwise traditional bedroom.

16Build a Bathtub

In this loft bedroom designed by ETC.etera, the bedroom is lined with mirrors for a magnifying effect and the elevated en-bedroom bathtub ensures plenty of romance and style.

17Hang a Canopy

Is there anything sexier than a gauzy canopy? There's just something enchanting about the flowey, semi-sheer look. Take note from this bedroom and punch things up with a vibrant dose of color in your throw pillows and area rug.

18Bring In Oversized Plants

Turn your bedroom into a lush garden oasis with indoor trees and plenty of florals. Though this main bedroom feels grand and over the top, it's also grounded thanks to the nature-inspired design elements.

19Choose a Luxe Headboard

That luxe green velvet headboard in a bedroom by Ashby Studio evokes the romance of a garden or hidden forest. A headboard like this one in a rich hue is the perfect romantic touch for anyone looking for something less overtly romantic.

20Emphasize a View

Lookout points are also called makeout points for a reason, so take note and accentuate an expansive view. In this Montana home designed by Kylee Shintaffer, the bed faces a beautiful mountain view. The rustic materials mixed with elegant decor strike the perfect balance.

21Make It Moody

Make a bold statement with black painted walls and floors. Enveloped in inky black paint, your bedroom will feel a lot more intimate.

22Display Evocative Art

That abstract artwork is a highly romantic note in this main bedroom. There's just something about that smoke-like scene that makes us want to dim the lights.

23Go All White

Piles of sumptuous layers ensure you'll never want to leave the bedroom. All-white interiors channel the dreaminess of clouds while the antique mirror has an alluring, nostalgic presence.

24Keep It Light

Sometimes a four-poster bed is more romantic when it doesn't have curtains or a canopy attached. As is the case in this bedroom by Ishka Designs. The simple neutral color palette and easy-breezy sheer curtains are well-suited for the Jamaican locale, where heavier, layered fabrics might weigh down the space.

25Venetian Headboard

"Exuberantly feminine, yet resolutely chic" was designer Jonathan Berger's motto for decorating this Brooklyn townhouse. The vintage pieces scream romance.

26Hang Sheers

Semi-sheer, gauzy curtains evoke a sense of ethereal romance. They'll diffuse the light for a soft and dreamy effect. Even better if the bed looks out onto a gorgeous view when the curtains are pulled back.

27Set the Scene

In this bedroom designed by Hecker Guthrie, the dark, long and lean wooden panels bring grit and polish while the luxe red armchair and plush cream carpet create warmth.

28Evoke the Clouds

This bedroom designed by Heather Hilliard is pure and simple elegance, enveloped in gorgeous shades of white and cream punctuated by blue accents. Add a mohair throw (or something equally as fluffy) for a luxe, cozy atmosphere.
