Full Auto

Given the dearth of Xbox 360 games of late, I was extremely happy to get a chance to play Full Auto. An extremely explosive title, Full Auto gives you a racing game with the punch of twin machine guns and high explosive mines. Shiny and polished does not a great game make however, and I don't think Full Auto hits on all 8 cylinders. With Xbox Live support built in, there's great potential for fun here, but the single player campaign is devoid of any real character, being essentially one gigantic ladder climb with the occasional variation thrown in.

The first and most noticeable element of the gameplay is how squirrelly the controls can be. Gran Turismo this ain't. That said, you'll be racing through the streets at insane speeds, power-sliding around corners, all the while blowing the unholy crap out of everything around you. As a result, not having to worry terribly about how tight your driving skills are is a bonus. As you play through the single player campaign, you'll unlock the vehicles and weapon assortments that Full Auto thrives on. One of the more entertaining packages is the Hunter, that equips you with two machine guns and a forward mounted rocket launcher. Burnout may let you create accidents, but this game lets you cause disasters. Some of the weapons face to the rear, a few of the forward facing ones can be aimed, and the designers have also added a couple of surprising choices to boot.

I can't say much in the way of bad about games on the Xbox 360, but unfortunately, Full Auto does pack a few flaws. The graphics are well done and shiny, but there's a lot of replication here. You don't get introduced to new stages with new looks all that often, and you'll see many elements repeated on each stage. One example is how generically similar all city monuments are, or how identical every gas station seems to look. Plus, when things get hectic, the framerate goes down. There's not much to say about how Full Auto sounds, because it isn't that easy to listen to music over the sounds of gunfire, but it isn't bad, I'll say that much.

I'm calling this a good game just because of its length, as it is fairly long to play through the campaign and then you've got Xbox Live on top of that, but I'd say only just. It is fun to blow stuff up for a while, but with a bit longer, this game could've been much much better.

Full Auto

Racing game

2006 video game

Full Auto is a video game for the Xbox 360 console published by Sega. Originally Developed by Pseudo Interactive for the PC, it is a vehicular combatracing game. It features destructible environments and (in certain races) a mode called "Unwreck" which rewinds time if the player makes a mistake and wants to try again. The game was removed from Games on Demand in August 2012.

A sequel, Full Auto 2: Battlelines, was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

Vehicles[edit]

In Full Auto, there are four vehicle classes. Each has its own abilities, strengths and weaknesses. There is Class A, which are faster, but have less durability than their counterparts. Class B is the middle class of vehicles having a fair amount of speed, and decent durability. The slow, and highly durable class is Class C. A fourth class, Class S, is home to the "ultimate" class where its vehicle is very powerful, fast and durable. Note that in online play all players, regardless of how far they have gotten in the career mode, have access to all vehicles in whatever class the host of the room determines. However tuneable weapons are not permitted on Live play until the gamer has unlocked them from the career mode.

Weapons[edit]

The weapons of Full Auto are mounted on the vehicles, and have unlimited ammunition, but require a cooldown period if fired too quickly. The weapons become active after approximately 10 seconds of racing into the game.

Reception[edit]

Reception

The game received "average" reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic.[2] In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of 27 out of 40,[8] while Famitsu X360 gave it a score of two eights and two sevens for a total of 30 out of 40.[7]

Theo Wells of The Times gave the game four stars out of five, saying, "Graphically, the level of detail in the tracks is simply stunning compared with the scenery on Burnout, a reflection of the superiority of the new Xbox over the old."[19] Michael Donahoe of Maxim similarly gave it four stars, saying, "A variety of wheels and weaponry ensures there'll be loads of destruction, while the online option gives this gas-guzzler some extra mileage."[20] However, Jason Hill of The Sydney Morning Herald gave it two-and-a-half stars out of five, saying, "A big selection of different events suggests variety but the action soon becomes repetitive. Full Auto's main competitor, Burnout, offers significantly more diversity in its challenges."[18]
