Beaver County officials to explore new juvenile detention center concept

BEAVER — County officials want to explore their options for housing juveniles.

Beaver County Courthouse

Beaver County Board of Commissioners Chairman Dan Camp plans to open dialogue with the county's prison board, juvenile probation and courts to discuss potentially building a new juvenile detention center near the county jail in Hopewell Township.

"We have a space down near the jail and want to see if it's OK if I shoot an email to everybody to see if we can start discussing the costs before we really take the bull by the horns," Camp said. "I just want to start the discussion.

Camp said that the county is spending more than a half million dollars annually to send children to other counties' facilities. He wants to explore an option that would long-term save money.

The county sold the land that housed the former Allencrest Juvenile Detention Center for about $650,000 last year. The county hasn't housed juveniles there since 2009, when the final handful of children were transferred to an Ohio facility.

A potential new facility could be structured differently, Camp said.

"That was where they could house children under the age of 18 who committed serious crimes," Camp said of Allencrest. The facility had a $2.1 million annual budget and became too expensive for the county to operate when it was shuttered in 2009.

Commissioner Tony Amadio said he supports exploring the shared services opportunities if it's economically feasible. In 2009, Amadio said the county couldn't continue to operate Allencrest the way it was being run. Now, he said he wants to learn from the mistakes made over the 50-year history of the facility.

"As long as we keep to our needs," Amadio said. "We need to keep our kids in the county if we can. That was a big problem back in the day."

Currently, Camp said the county spends about $500,000 annually to provide a bed for children at facilities such as Glade Run for a week at a time.

Officials just want to start the conversation to see if a new detention center is a viable option, Camp said.
